If they are still intent on using the original yard location than I don't see the point in ending the line just at UTSC when the trackage north to Sheppard would already be built; so why not just terminate the line at Morningside-Sheppard like the original Scarborough-Malvern LRT? If they aren't going to do that then the city has a good amount of land on the south side of the 401 they can use to build a storage facility for the Crosstown without having to cross the 401. It doesn't have the be a maintenance facility like Mount Dennis, just a storage yard for LRV's.
Something like this yard in Calgary. Nothing more than some storage tracks and a shed. It's relatively inexpensive when compared to a major facility like Mount Dennis, but still serves as a way to get trains at each end of the line quickly. Major maintenance work would obviously still take place at Mount Dennis.
