Why can they not just open the god damn tunnel temporarily? I don't see what this has to do with digging up things twice. Metrolinx needs to cut with the bullshit and find a solution NOW.
you will note there was no further response from AMA.

They know a) they have messed this up....b) they could do better (if they were better)....c) their answers are complete and utter BS and that just because the new track is not being laid at this time that there is absolutely no reason why the tunnel extension could not be open.

The north entrance to this station stands as a monument to their inability to plan and construct....they are much more willing to discuss the construction projects where they can point to someone else to blame....not the case here.

Exactly. That reply to your tweet really pisses me off. It is such a ridiculous deflection and lie and shows a complete unwillingness to be transparent with the public who is paying their salary.

As you said, the tunnel could likely be opened within a few days to pedestrian traffic. Take down the hoarding, clean it up, change the temporary fencing around. Done.

Hey, this is the same org that rolled over work at Union Station to an "enhancement project" and then called the 7 year shed redo the "Victory in Iraq", per the board capital budget report.

Per the Mayor of Lincoln's tweet today: "It's official. Grimsby GO Station is announced a few minutes ago by MPP JIM BRADLEY Congratulations all round by @TownofLincolnON @Township of West Lincoln @NiagaraRegion Chair Al Caslin Great news for the economy of Niagara West communities and phase 1 for Niagara GO Train"
Great if you live in the area and have a car, not so great if you are visiting or don't have a car, unlike the VIA station location.

Awesome how the new stations look consistent, looks much more inviting to potential new riders than the classic big bus curb.

Milliken in particular being right next to Pacific Mall and that new Chinese Mall has so much potential.
Traffic on Steeles will be next to impossible during the years of construction

Just like those nights when they were double tracking th intersection. Everyone would be forced to use Denison or McNichol in order to get from Kennedy to Midland. If people were smart, they would avoid Steeles entirely and use 14th or Finch instead.

Now imagine if both Steeles and Finch’s grade-separations were both in construction at the same time. :)

Here's the construction update for the Scarborough-Markham project:

Work Performed/Construction Activities:
  • Delivering concrete ties into St. Clair yard
  • Delivering ballast into McNicoll yard
  • Dewatered ponding water at northeast corner of Finch Avenue crossing
  • Laid out sewer protection work area at Passmore Avenue crossing
  • Removed rails except ties from the existing west track in between Kennedy road and Steeles Avenue crossing during last night shift
  • Ballasting new south track in between Passmore Avenue crossing to McNicoll yard
Work Scheduled for This Week:
  • Dewatering
  • Snow removal
  • Delivering ties to St. Clair yard
  • Shipping NWs posts
  • Installation of segmental walls
  • Sewer line protection work

Metrolinx has also upgraded the Canpa sub (mentioned here a while back) without any clear reason.

I believe, as per previous discussion, consensus was that Canpa will likely be used for Lakeshore West detours when some bridges between Mimico and Union are upgraded.

*very audible sigh*

Article from today:

GO’s Lakeshore East expansion breaking ground in Courtice
Construction begins this spring for GO Bus Park and Ride lot on Courtice Road
NEWS 05:00 AM by Jennifer O'Meara Clarington This Week

CLARINGTON — Construction is soon to begin for a Courtice GO Bus Park and Ride lot at the site of the future Courtice Road GO Train station.

“We’re expecting that will be ready by the end of this year. The service will start either late this year or very early next year. So that will be a step along the way toward expanding the service,” said Chris Burke, Metrolinx director of service planning, planning and policy.

Planning for bus services to the Courtice park and ride site is in progress, Burke told Clarington council at the Monday, March 5 meeting. He said GO buses currently travelling past Courtice along Highway 401 could stop at the new park and ride lot. Metrolinx is still considering rider demand and the capacity before deciding on the new bus schedule.

“I’m happy to see that you’re going ahead and building a park and ride in Courtice, that’s fantastic,” said Coun. Steven Cooke.

Clarington Mayor Adrian Fosters asked Metrolinx to post signs in advance to let residents know the new park and ride lot is coming.

“It’s a really good band-aid and shows responsiveness, both of your office and the minister’s office, in considering that and moving ahead. That was in response to our request and we really appreciate it,” said Foster.

He added council wants to see trains in Bowmanville as soon as possible.

In June 2016, the Ontario Government and Metrolinx announced the extension of the GO Transit Lakeshore East Corridor by 20 kilometres from Oshawa to Bowmanville. The GO Train is expected to roll into Clarington for peak rush-hour service only by 2024. The plans are for four trains leaving Clarington in the morning and arriving at Toronto’s Union Station between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. and four trains leaving Union Station (between 3:30 and 7 p.m.) to head back into Clarington.

To project to expand the GO Train into Clarington includes four new GO rail stations (two in Oshawa, one in Courtice and one in Bowmanville), a bridge over Highway 401, a CP corridor expansion, three grade separations (2 road-to-rail, 1 rail-to-rail), 14 bridge expansions, nine level crossing modifications (seven of which are in Clarington) and a new layover facility.

“Significant investments are required along the Lakeshore East corridor to deliver the services that we’ve committed too,” said Burke.

I challenge you to go to Mimico at 5PM and just look at how many people get into their cars or start the long walk east. There were some unofficial Metrolinx numbers that Milczyn presented once which showed only 300 people daily from the Mimico area actually use Mimico station. The rest is from elsewhere. Do with that information what you will, but it certainly doesn't seem like a business case to keep that station open.

I've thought about this comment, and have watched how the crowd splits out of Mimico as they depart the tunnel when I myself arrive. Left is towards Royal York, which are walkers or people catching the 76 bus. Right is the parking lot (330 spots?) or walking to parts east or north east, or a few getting picked up by cars.

There is a fair amount of people headed left out to Royal York, say 50% anecdotally.

I also noticed this in the TTC report:

Based on the most recent ridership data from GO Transit, approximately
1,500 customers use Mimico GO Station on a daily basis. Approximately 350
customers originate from the Humber Bay Shores area and Mimico south of the Lakeshore West
GO Train tracks.
