That's a very good question. And to be brutally honest, not one that I've ever considered asking. The other question would be…. How much woukd the FOI request cost?

Before everyone gets their hopes up that the full double-tracking of the Barrie Line has started.....
Which just happens to be nearby the lumber yard that CN served during the day, causing bustitutions….I had heard that there was a plan to construct a runaround track, but things went quiet on that. I’m not sure if the lumber yard even receives loads any longer, may have switched to transload. Before everyone gets their hopes up that the full double-tracking of the Barrie Line has started.....
Metrolinx has very quietly started work on another short section of double track on the Barrie Line. I don't have my notes handy, but I think that this will stretch from Mile 25 (just north of the Humber River crossing) to about Mile 27 (north of Bathurst).

Here's my attempt at illustrating the new double track section under construction (in orange). I'm probably a bit off with the exact start/end locations. Before everyone gets their hopes up that the full double-tracking of the Barrie Line has started.....

This is the thing.....no one knows what this one is for, at least in terms of my contacts within Metrolinx. Here's my attempt at illustrating the new double track section under construction (in orange). I'm probably a bit off with the exact start/end locations.

I wonder what they plan to do with it. My guess is that it has something to do with addressing the ridiculous train movements included in the weekend schedules due to the through trips to Allandale.

Normally the hourly pattern is that the northbound train arrives at Aurora at :44, then departs southbound at :57. But the train arriving at 11:44 doesn't depart southbound at 11:57, because that is already covered by run 16 arriving from Allandale. So that earlier train needs to go hide somewhere for an hour to let run 16 past, as well as run 15 which is heading north to Allandale. I assume that it gets stashed in the siding between Maple and King City. It then needs to follow run 15 up to Aurora, in order to start run 18 southbound at 12:57.
The simplest purpose for the new segment of double-track is to keep the same operation, but store the extra train closer to the station.
The more interesting notion is that the trains to Barrie would slot in between the hourly services, passing them at this new siding and another new siding exactly 30 minutes south of it (somewhere around Eglinton). That way the base hourly service could arrive and depart Aurora regularly rather than every third train needing to go sit a time out for an hour while the Allandale services pass by.
No date is given in the article.
But of note, tracks have not been laid, and will not be, under this contract.

"late this year"This would seem to provide a bit more information for the 409-401 tunnel?

My understanding is that the track work for the tunnel is on procurement, and they hope to have it finalized late this year. I think the full electrification contract is still sometime next year?"late this year"
thats sooner than the march 2022 date ive heard about
No. I interpret it as:My understanding is that the track work for the tunnel is on procurement, and they hope to have it finalized late this year. I think the full electrification contract is still sometime next year?
I would love for that to be the case. Let’s see what happens. They announce the winning team for the OnCorr works late this year.
- Financial close happens in March 2022.
- OnCorr works start in late 2022/2023.
No. I interpret it as:
- The track laying at the 409/401 tunnel is part of the OnCorr works for GO Expansion.
