I saw them too. They were in use in the 1980's period. You know how GO conductors look along the platform via the doors? I think that's what they used the openable windows for.

They were the conductor's original designed placement, but the move to 3-person crews plus the requirement for the CSA to operate the mobility ramp (which was a new addition) forced relocation to the lower level.

The new bike coaches are now beginning to appear on trains:

If you know, did the downstairs controls always exist or were they retrofits?

Crews could always key out and access the intercom from the lower level.

The only coaches that had full door control panels retrofitted downstairs were the Series 4 coaches, and that’s because they were repurposed as accessibility coaches in the mid 90’s-00’s, because they had a panel added downstairs they removed the panel and openable window upstairs.

The 2300-series cars had them retrofitted to the doorways when they were converted to accessible cars in the early 1990s.

2500-2521 were the first cars delivered with them in 2001 or so.

All cars built since have had them located in the doorways.

These coaches can fit 2 more bikes than the old ones
There is still room to put even way more of these style of racks in, its not an issue of space, just MX decided to stop at this number.

Not only that, but its easier to get your bike out when its packed. On the old ones, when it was packed with bikes, and your bike was on the inside near the window, it was a pain to try to get it out past the other bikes.

Everywhere around the world use this style of bike storage system, its absolutely superior.

Saw a car with repainted doors but an old scheme body at Willowbrook just now.

Not just repainted doors, those are actually new doors. The older doors don't have such large windows. It's a sort of anachronism to have a coach with five windows on the lower level (old) but also tall windows in the doors (new).

It's also odd cause the rebuilt cab cars from what I've seen don't have the newer tall window doors.
