I recall some of them are long distance hauls, but some are milk runs. It would be like if GO had 15 stops on the Lakeshore lines in Toronto.
It's 43km from Long Branch to Rouge Hill GO, so that would be 2.8km between stops. This is on par with Paris RER stop spacing of 2km to 3km.

I think that's a Toronto shortcoming rather than a Chicago overbuild.

To offer further context to the above exchange..........

LSW+LSE within the City of Toronto currently has 9 stations.

Park Lawn and East Harbour are both approved which would bring the total to 11.

No other stations are currently contemplated, though one at Spadina has long been considered, but not for use by Lakeshore Services, likewise Gerrard-Carlaw will exist for the Ontario Line but is planned to be bypassed by Lakeshore GO Services at this time.

If both were used there would be 13 total stations.

Well maybe I should have said 25 instead. Unless someone can explain otherwise, some of those Metra lines seem to have stops as close together as the Bloor subway.
There would be two stops between Mimico and Long Branch on some of those lines.

Ok....so I looked at some of the closer station distances on Milwakee District West run and they are in the 650m -750m range......... that is extremely close even by subway standards.

Metra Electric also has several in the ~750m range.

Sounds awful. Certainly something Toronto shouldn't strive to replicate.

Expand our subway network instead.

Sounds like Monday will be a day you should avoid the LSW

If LSW is full closed past Oakville on Monday somebody needs to let VIA Rail know, or at least the folks who maintain the website and Reservia…

Did you?

Just out of curiosity I just bounced over to the reservations site. It does not allow for any tickets for Toronto-Oakville on Monday November 3rd.

What exactly is the planned construction that requires such a large weekday shutdown?
I am guessing it's the repeated deferred plans for closures for the Blue Jays games, and they now finally want to finally finish off whatever it is they are working on (probably the bridges) before they get into the winter and weather conditions deteriorate.

We continue to cheer alongside you throughout the Blue Jays World Series. To make travelling more convenient during those games, we deferred critical bridge work that was scheduled for this weekend, Nov. 1 and 2.

A weekday closure of the LSW with a last minute change? This is going to be a DISASTER. There will be hundreds of people stranded at Oakville GO who don't even realized it's closed and the shuttle buses will be far overloaded.

What exactly is the planned construction that requires such a large weekday shutdown?

It's the Etobicoke Creek bridge replacement I think, to be specific. See these posts in the GO construction thread from last week:

Metrolinx has also given an update on the Etobicoke Creek bridge on the Lakeshore West Line.

"The Etobicoke Creek Trail under the bridge will be closed from November 28th until December 22nd. The closure is required to accommodate increased crew size, additional equipment and multiple work areas. The closure may extend longer than December 22nd depending on progress. An update will be provided closer to the aforementioned date.
There will be daytime and overnight work 24 hours a day on the following upcoming weekends: Nov 28-Dec 2, Dec 5-8 and Dec 19-22."

It sounds like they're scrambling to make up for lost time.

That's exactly what they're doing.

They're even considering having a mid-week closure of the Lakeshore West line - that's how bad things are. All options are on the table.

Dan
