Gorgeous. Beautiful. They should've kept it! What were they thinking taking it down? I can see how impractical it would be by today's standards; however, they could've moved it to a park or something. It would've been a great tourist spot and added a lot of old-world glamour to the city. Mind you, this would be true only if it were maintained over the years, or NOT absorbed into a condo development.

@DTowner they seemed to do exactly what you suggested - there's a 1906 photo of the arch, or perhaps a smaller version, standing by the water on the CNE grounds. There's also a night time shot of the arch, which is mis-labeled in the Toronto Archives as the Manufacturers Arch (which stood just south of Queens park).

And the Alexandra Gates still stand today, built for the same occasion, relocated to the top of Philosopher's Walk, between the ROM and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Check out the various pictures on my Ornamental Gates and Arches page.
