Can't believe you pulled this thread out of the depths of UrbanToronto history, because you can't pull the Clinton campaign back out of history and into life. LOL

What an interesting read. I went through the entire thread and read my thoughts on Clinton and wow... has my opinion of her changed!

I and other also underestimated the ability of Americans to overcome a racist history and voting for a black man.

I'm glued to the TV all day today. History is being made.

Sadly, not all together true. In much of the south-central US, the conservative heartland, Obama actually did much worse than Clinton or Kerry. I was also very surprised that Obama didn't capture Lousiana.

I also must admit that while barriers were broken in relation to racism, others were raised with gay rights. I can't believe how many states had propositions targeting gay individuals and couples... and they all passed.

Remember that in Louisiana, much of the Democratic urban New Orleans population is still scattered post-Katrina. It's a much more rural, and thus Republican, state than it was in the Clinton era. He came closer to winning Mississippi than any Democrat in years, and exit polls indicate that he got a higher percentage of the white male vote than any Democrat since Carter. Interestingly, the only states where he did significantly worse than any other Democrat were West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas.
