Can you imagine staying in one of those rooms that is in the interior part? That would suck so much. No light, not to mention no view. (Except the view of the room across the empty space)

Standard lightwell configuration - lots of apartments are like that in older cities - i.e. Paris.

Well, it has been built with new, taller buildings beside it in mind, hence the blank walls.

I don't mind one way of the other: it's a bricky area.

It almost looks manages to look like an Edwardian hotel-turned-flophouse on Vancouver's Downtown East Side...
 
There's still work going on at ground level. Scaffolding isn't down yet.
 
It strikes me as a very ordinary building. Not particularly ugly, but certainly not particularly beautiful. If they are offering lower rates than some of the other downtown hotels, then that's a good thing.
