Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro denounced for joining pro-dictatorship rally

Far-right president deemed ‘deplorable’ for flouting social distancing rules again – while coughing repeatedly – to bolster protests amid coronavirus

Mon 20 Apr 2020 15.05 BST

Former presidents, politicians and newspaper editorial boards have lined up to denounce the “moronic” and “anti-democratic” behaviour of Brazil’s far-right leader after he hit the streets to egg on protesters demanding a return to military dictatorship.

As the number of deaths caused by Covid-19 rose to nearly 2,500 on Sunday, Jair Bolsonaro left his presidential palace in Brazil’s capital, Brasília, to fraternize with flag-waving radicals.

Among the demands their banners listed were an end to the social distancing measures opposed by Bolsonaro, the closure of Brazil’s congress and supreme court, and a re-run of a dictatorship-era decree used by military rulers in the late 1960s to suffocate their political opponents.

One of the most popular and powerful figures in Jair Bolsonaro’s far-right administration – the celebrity justice minister Sérgio Moro – has resigned, setting up a potentially momentous political conflict just as Brazil struggles to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Moro – a hero for much of the Brazilian right and a hate figure for many on the left – announced his decision on Friday after clashing with the president over Bolsonaro’s sacking of the head of Brazil’s federal police.

Bolsonaro should do the right thing and resign.

Even his staunchest allies are turning their backs on him.

Perhaps a coup? It is Brazil...

I would not be surprised whatsoever. I have many friends in Brazil and they have all lost faith in their government both now and in the future. They believe that the government is eternally broken irrespective of who is in power. Brazil is a nation of corrupt, self serving politicians.

Brazilian government in turmoil after justice minister resigns

President Jair Bolsonaro denies he sought to influence federal police inquiries

Brazil’s government has been plunged into turmoil after the resignation of one of Jair Bolsonaro’s most powerful ministers sparked protests, calls for the president’s impeachment and an investigation into claims he had improperly interfered in the country’s federal police.

In a rambling televised address late on Friday, Brazil’s embattled president denied claims from his outgoing justice minister Sérgio Moro that he had sought to appoint a new federal police chief in order to gain access to secret intelligence reports – for reasons that remain murky.

Just like Ontario eh?

Replace a bumbling, bloated financial sink of corruption with a business money-obsessed wanker.

At least our wanker is taking this seriously and seems to at least be leading unlike whatever the hell money man down there is doing.

Ok seriously. Do you have to troll EVERY forum with your nonsense?

Yes.

Though I don't see what is nonsensical about what I said above. Seems like a legit assessment of the situation.

The previous government in Brazil was corrupt and financially ruinous. So was ours in Ontario. Both were replaced by governments headed by businessmen obsessed with money.
Did you need that explained to you or are you upset that I'd bring up the parallels?

Also, here let me help you..........actually, I'm not sure where the ignore function is, sorry. Ask a friend.

Unfortunately for you, I have an opinion on everything and all the time in the world to express them. ?

Why would a coup be appropriate? This dude was elected.

I don't like any of the political leaders we've had in charge federally since, like....Kim Campbell is cool now, but I'm not sure about her then.

I don't want a coup.

That's nonsense talk. Watch out, Richard White might complain about you trolling. ;)

Where could Brazil's criminal investigation of Jair Bolsonaro lead?

Brazil's Supreme Court has approved an investigation into whether President Bolsonaro meddled with federal police to protect allies. The results could trigger a dramatic chain of events that hinge largely on one person.

As world leaders focus on fighting the coronavirus pandemic in their countries, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro faces another major battle — potentially his biggest political crisis since taking office.

The Supreme Court on Monday authorized an investigation of claims that Bolsonaro interfered with federal law enforcement. Former Justice Minister Sergio Moro, a highly popular politician, made the bombshell accusation during his resignation speech Friday, the same day Bolsonaro announced he had fired the federal police chief.

"I told the president that [changing the police chief] would be political interference. He said that it would be, too," Moro said.

Moro alleges that Bolsonaro wanted to replace the police head with someone who would give him access to information and reports and would shield his relatives and allies from investigations.

Federal police are currently investigating Bolsonaro's son Carlos for allegedly having organized a fake news scheme, according to major newspaper Folha de S. Paulo .

On Tuesday the president tried to name a family friend to head the police, but a Supreme Court justice halted the nomination the next day.
