No nfitz, Rob Ford said no such thing. It was js97 who suggested that the AIDS conference trip expense was also wasteful public spending. Ford's only attacked Rae on the basis of his long overdue bon voyage from munipal politics: http://www.raemustpay.com/

Good riddance.

Fair enough ... though still seems a little odd that candidate with a reputation as a homophobe is attacking a gay councillor like this ... I'd have thought it would make more sense to pick battles.

Then again, it may say something about how far Kyle's come from being a mere "gay councillor"--though there might be a more subtle euphemistic factor behind my populism vs elitism point. In which case, today's "homophobia" might have more in common with the anti-Semitism of past eras than it may appear: "the gays in charge" being like "the Jews in charge", etc...

I'm really no fan of his and he's pretty much taken the soul out f Church Street.

I'm curious, how did Kyle Rae take the soul out of Church Street?

Spider, I care very much. Unfortunately, the left and middle has pretty much let Kyle get away with murder.

People don't want to be accused of homophobia, so Kyle has them all cowed into silence. In that context, only someone who doesn't care about being called a homophobe feels free to comment.

I'm not going to defend Rob Ford, even though he's made some sloppy overtures of late. Still, these questions need to be asked.

I can't imagine any good defence of the $12,000 hors d'oeuvres and Rae hasn't made one, other than him having turned over campaign money he raised but couldn't spend. That was never his anyway, and the idea that he could draw on it later is obscene.

Why is Kyle Rae going to the AIDS conference only weeks before he retires? Why is he spending so mch money on his trip, when my quick look on Hotwire showed me even at this late date he could still fly and sleep in a good quality hotel for much less. It's late in the day, but perhaps someone else should be going. Or perhaps there's no need to go at all since little in the way of new information is available at these meeetings. It isn't ethical to hold up treatment info for a splashy announcement. The truth is these large conferences have little value and attract few medical or research papers. It's largely sociopolitical, which has value, but in this fiscal climate maybe one could look into teleconferencing.

It says much about how badgering and belittling Rae is that few will take him on over this. He's gotten away with murder on the "criticism of me is homophobia" shrillness. I do wish more people would confront him about it.

Cheers
A better 'junket' would have been Rae's attending the research and treatment conference in Saskatoon last month. It says a lot that he wasn't there. I'm not certain he's ever been to a local, regional on international conference. Saskatoon is full of nice people, but it's no Vienna. Or Berlin. Or Amsterdam. Or Bangkok. In short, he's more attracted by the destination than the agenda. His usual rejoinder when invited to a meeting in some less-than-exciting destination was not "what's the agenda" but "I don't want to go to Hamilton! (Buffalo, Toledo, Guelph, Winnipeg etc.

I said "I'm not certain he's ever been to a local, regional on international conference". It should have read "I'm not certain he's ever been to a local, regional on NATIONAL conference." In other words, he only goes to the international ones.

12 grand is small fee to pay to get ride of this jerk. Bye Kyle. Please never come back.

No doubt. I saw him right before Christmas (and about when he'd announced he wasn't running again) and thanked him for the early present.

I emailed him when those tamils were blocking the street on University to express my displeasure about the matter as he was my Member of Council, and got a reply that they were entitled to do this under our Constitution and CCRF.

It was at this point that I began considering an anti-Rae election campaign whereby I would encourage people to vote for anyone but Rae. I was considering growing and running a turnip in the election, as the turnip could do much less damage and be much less of an obtuse dingbat as Rae. Regrettably, this did not come to pass, nor was it needed.

Seriously, it was their right to block an entire street and by extension a major highway.

FYI.. i believe Smitherman and Pantalone where present at his little party..
He's leaving, and there is no point in beating a mute point.
I also believe Council Voted and approved of Rae's little trip to Council?. So people should look at who there council was and write them a stern letter.

It's also a really pathetic move for some on here to play the 'gay card'.

Vote for NEW COUNCILLORS!

Agreed. I was at a committee meeting a while back (can't remember which one) and he was more interested in checking his email and chatting to his neighbour than listening to the person addressing them. Got quite miffed when the speaker called him on it!

Spider, I think the reason you aren't seeing foaming rage might have something to do with this...

Our city will soon be going into lockdown for a party for our Prime Minister and 19 of his friends. That party will cost the taxpayer BILLIONS of dollars. Getting angry about a $12k party in the shadow of G20 is difficult to say the least.

Did Rae even expense the party, or is Ford doing this preemptively?
Kyle Rae has been going to annual AIDS confronences since 2006, when Ford was talking about women getting AIDS from bi-guys. That year there was a vote to send Rob Ford to the confronce, it failed by one vote (Rob voted against). It's been a voted expense every year since to send Kyle Rae.
