This is very interesting. It talks about LRTs, Commuter Rail and Regional Rail. No mention of HSR.
 
.. and that’s how it was lost in 1986 (?), at a time where routes were revived across the country (e.g., Moncton-Edmundston, Toronto-Havelock, Jasper-Vancouver).
Half my friends seem to have kids at Trent U. It’s too bad the Toronto-Peterborough-Havelock run was shuttered. There must be a couple of hundred university students a day making that run on the GO Bus via the GoTrain to Oshawa.

One upside to Canada (officially) becoming the 51st State could be improved passenger rail service. Might be easier to provide direct service from Calgary to Toronto, for example.
Name one Amtrak long distance route that services cities the with populations similar to those on the Calgary to Toronto route.
