Where is North Street?

Apparently it became Bay Street (south of Bloor).

Fascinating to see all the properties that were eventually demolished so that New City Hall, Nathan Phillips Square and the TD Centre could be built.

I wish we had the population/business for 10-15 more commerce courts back then.

this picture really facinates me.

i can't even believe how much the waterfront has changed.

Great Selects!

Here's a neat resource I just discovered: ourroots.ca

It has all sorts of digitized versions of local history books. There are some great Toronto books there, some with great photos some with grainy, underexposed shots.

Only if you're nostalgic for The Ward, a slum that was replaced by New City Hall, or believe that we'd be better off without one of the best group of buildings ( the TD Centre ) by one of the great architects, I suppose.

Indeed, in fact slum it too kind of a description for The Ward. I have pictures of it and there's nothing of importance that was lost due to New City Hall beyond the Registry Building. And even it only looked impressive from the front.

I think the sociological regret's tended to be directed less at the uprooting of the Ward than at the uprooting of Chinatown...

Very interesting collection, condovo. I'm not sure what the biggest tragedy was for Toronto but for me the loss of King West as Toronto's grand street is up there.
