I'd like to see the police arrest open drug users ever. Or even just show up.
The same question was asked to the new Chief. He explained that since COVID, minor possessions of illegal drugs is not being prosecuted by the courts. They can fine them the $25 under the public spaces bylaw but that's about it. And ask them to move along or if someone needs help get them to the necessary support services. In the future, once there's somewhere to take someone, they will be able to detain people under the new Compassionate Care Act.

If the Compassionate Care Act can find a way to thread the needle between obvious Charter violations and legitimate help being provided, I think it could significantly help downtown. Continuing to do nothing just isn't enough.
