Tory's defence of the Scarborough subway by tagging its opponents as anti-immigrant and anti-Scarborough shows he's Rob Ford in a better suit. The Mayor's leap into the gutter of identity politics implies that even he knows it's impossible to make a rational case for the Scarborough subway on the numbers. For a self-described fiscal conservative, he's pretty willing to blow really big money on uneconomic projects like the Gardiner East rebuild, Scarborough subway, and Smart Track (whatever that is). We'll be paying for his mistakes - financially and in continuing to have a dysfunctional transportation system - for decades.
 
By the way, what about all the people of Rexdale (including immigrants!) that are left out of your Dumb Track plan? Why does it turn west towards a bunch of rich white neighbourhoods and suburban development sites. Tory, do you hate Etobicoke north? Is it fair if I call you a racist?
Or the irony that the subway plan will stop short of Malvern, another area with poor transit access and a high percentage of recent immigrants.

Imagine if Tory actually believed this. He could be championing bringing the Relief Line north to Eglinton, giving subway access to the people of Thorncliffe and Flemingdon Park, reducing their commuting times to downtown by 60%, from 40-50 minutes to a mere 15-20 minutes.

Robbie and Dougie were/are all about arm waving but real work, and blame, is to be squarely on the shoulders of those who work for a living.

Let's not forget the it was Robbie that stated something like there is no need to have an EA because there is no environment underground. Would it not been nice to have tens (at least) of workers traped, drown, or just crashed due to a cave-in.

The Gardiner East needed to be dealt with instead of pushing the incurred debt forward to others and costs create a bigger hole.

I agree with the "tagging" assessment but it's all politics and not ethnically sound.

It's true that Tory is FUBARing the transit file but all the blame is not his nor did he create the present problems other than SmartTrack, which I see as a bunch of stations to be inclusive of major communities and improve wait times.

The "Scarborough Subway" is Robbie's legacy and apropos it is considering the cock-up that was his term as Mayor. This boondoggle started and continues to be political which is rife with good speak, or Fordisms if you like, and thinks nothing of the people who would use it or the those who would pay the bill, just their continued political existence.

Lastly, haven't people realized that Toronto is run by the council, not Tory, he may have extended certain messes but he didn't create them.

Hopefully the Crosstown East will help and will be extended to the zoo, that is if the line ever gets built.

Ah, his non-apologies are so comforting. And this morning on Newstalk Tory said that concern about his op-ed is "manufactured outrage", and that critics are "trying to distract from getting on with building transit". He also said that Matlow's criticism on Tory's comments were "completely unacceptable". Recall that this is what Matlow said:

Scarborough elects some of the dumbest councillors, though mine at least doesn't make the news for saying outrageous things.
 
This is reminding me of John Tory's stubbornness with the faith-based school funding, and how he just can't seem to admit that he erred (until it's too late). What universe does one have to live in, to think that a one stop Scarborough subway for 3 billion dollars is good money spent? Seriously, is this the legacy that he wants to leave?

Can we not have a sane, and assertive mayor to bring us out of the transit stone ages already?
