Becasue I've actually done extensive research on the history of Mississauga City Centre. I've spent hours pouring over official city reports at the Central Library.

I also didn't admit I was wrong, I used the word "probably" because I still doubt your claim that it opened in 1969.

I'm getting my information right from the source? Where do you get your information from?

Is the building in question the one with Tim Horton's at the base? It sure looks like the oldest there, and has that late 1960s feel to it.

The other buildings look 1970s-1980s, like MEC, the SW corner of Robert Speck and Hurontario and the one with Ruth's Chris. Though the CIBC one looks about 1990 (the old city hall site)

BTW - anyone have a pic of the old city hall?

The building in question is the blue one with Ruth's Steakhouse. It opened in 1969 and renovated in 1988 according to this site. I am pretty sure the other 4 buildings along City Centre Dr were built around the same time. The site used to show the date built for all the office buildings, too bad they don't show them anymore.

Again, none of these 5 buildings have any underground parking (unlike the buildings built in the 80's and 90's, like Sussex Centre and MEC) and they (except the one built in 1969) look old too so you can tell they are the oldest and were probably built in the same time period.

Note that picture is reversed. They scanned the negative wrong. The odl city hall is on the left side and that is Hurotnairo at the bottom.

So that pic proves that there were at least 4 existing office buildings when Square One was built, and all on City Centre Dr, like I said.

Futuremayor = owned

But were they built in the 50s? No...I'm looking at an aerial photo of the Square One area from 1964 and there's nothing but a farmhouse.

I flipped the image horizontally and it does now appear to be Hurontario, though old city hall then must've been on the site beside the current CIBC building.

77 City Centre, 1978

So 77 City Centre (blue building with Ruth's Chris) was indeed the McLaughlin building and the old city hall was torn down I guess?

Scarberian: there was nothing there but cows until about 1969 or 1970.

The picture didn't seem to make sense, and I looked at it for a while before realizing, as doady says, that it has been reversed.

The old City Hall was actually unsafe. It had a reputation for windows popping out in high winds. No tears were shed when it was torn down. It lasted less than 20 years. It was replaced by the present CIBC building at 1 City Centre Drive.

Anth: the "blue one" is 77 City Centre Drive, shown in the photo as it originally looked before it had a major overhaul about 10 years ago, after the biggest tenant, Revenue Canada, had moved out and left it mainly vacant.

doady, you also proved yourself wrong.

If you follow the link and look at the information for each building, with the exemption of that one building in 1969, no other buildings were built in the 1950's and 60's like you claimed. Mississauga City Centre was all still farm fields then.

Square One and the rest of the buildings on City Centre Drive were built in the 1970's and onwards.

I like this one too:

Square One, 1973

Though it doesn't look like city hall was the blue one...
This picture also shows how "Square One" was originally -- just that -- a square! I vaguely remember a garden in the middle of the square that my dad would take me to when my mom was shopping (before extensions criss-crossed the square).

Wow. Those old photos on Mississauga's website are so neat to look at!

That is one hideous city hall - it reminds me of the old Brampton Civic Centre, which was also built next to a shopping mall (though it was meant for Chinguacousy Township when built).
