Some comparables shared from Calgary report on the matter including where Edmonton fares.

Edmonton might actually have highest per capita water infrastructure because they are basing it on an Edmonton population of 1.3 Million which we don't have.

I've been wondering how susceptible Edmonton is to something similar happening, but haven't really been able to find anything on it, nor any local media reports talking to Epcor about it. Anyone with more insight as to how at risk we are on this, or if Epcor truly is on top of it moreso than Calgary?

How Edmonton is building a water system that lasts

A good article published by EPCOR’s CEO. Seems like they had a similar idea to me…. Funny

We had the 2024 incident at the E.L smith WTP, but outside of that, nothing major. EPCOR is crazy regarding upkeep and monitoring of their infrastructure. I remember working at both their WTP’s and the equipment and infrastructure is world class. As the article I posted mentioned they are very proactive and not retroactive in their maintenance etc.

And that EL Smith incident could have been a lot worse...
We got lucky there.

I think it says 1.2 Million there which I’m very confident we have.

I don't know what I was trying to say there, haha. Maybe I meant to say Calgary's figure is based on 1.3M, when in reality it's more like 1.5M isn't it? - meaning maybe they don't have the most amount of pipe per capita, we might have more.

EPCOR water infrastructure network in Edmonton, includes approximately 4,400 kilometers (or 4,391 km) of transmission and distribution water mains.
Key details regarding EPCOR's water infrastructure in the Edmonton area:
  • Total Pipe Network: Approximately 4,391 km of water mains. Plus 5 bulk water stations
  • Storage Capacity: 13 reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of 811 megalitres (ML).
  • Treatment Volume: The E.L. Smith and Rossdale water treatment plants treat 140,000 megalitres annually, averaging about 383 ML of treated water daily.
  • Materials: The system includes various types of piping, with cast iron mains comprising approximately 540 km of the network, which are being progressively replaced.
  • Does not say how much pipe is similar to the Calgary pipe.
  • Customer Base: In addition to Edmonton residents, EPCOR provides water to over 60 surrounding towns and municipalities in the region.

No acutal Poplulation numbers but it can be calculated based on the service area.
