Nationally recognized architect aims to turn farmer's field into vibrant urban plaza
It could be a bit of a magic trick for architects aiming to create a vibrant, urban plaza on the very western suburban fringe of Edmonton.

Parking lots would be pushed to each side, a cafe and shops would spill out into the square and space for market vendors would line the main entrance to the Lewis Farms Recreation Centre. The plan is heading to city council’s community services committee meeting Friday for design approval.

“It’s the idea to create an urban park,” Gilles Saucier, lead designer with the Montreal-based firm Saucier + Perrotte, said Thursday. The architecture firm is ranked among the top in Canada. He designed it with local firm Architecture Tkalcic Bengert, now part of Stantec.

“We want to avoid the idea of a big building surrounded by parking lots,” added architect Trevor Davis, who worked with Saucier on the design. The recreation centre should eventually have bus service to the plaza.

'Hugely needed' Edmonton Lewis Farms Rec Centre up for debate
Edmonton’s $215-million Lewis Farms Rec Centre is “hugely needed,” says a west end community rep, as councillors prepare to debate the complex’s future Friday.

“The population is increasing every single year and there is no rec centre that would support the needs of west end residents,” said Irina Langreiter, president of the Lewis Estates Community League, in an interview Thursday.

“I have to take my daughter to St. Albert to skate, and she always asks, ‘Why isn’t there anything nearby?’”

A report heading to the community and public services committee Friday outlined new drawings for what the west end rec centre could look like, underscoring how much it would cost to build the site ($215 million) and operate it ($10 to $13 million annually).

The centre — which would feature a dive tank, pools, a fitness centre, “child development space,” rinks and a library — would fill a void in the growing west end, according to Langreiter.

Edmonton company building city's first shipping-container apartment
A three-storey Edmonton apartment building is under construction using a material that’s often seen as waste — second-hand shipping containers.

The city’s first multi-family sea-can accommodations are being made of 48 steel containers pre-fabricated into modules at a Calgary factory, hauled north by truck, lifted into position by crane and welded into place.

“I had been reading about it over the last few years. Everyone was saying you could get considerably lower cost, faster erection time and be part of a green solution,” says A.J. Slivinski, whose Step Ahead Properties is adding the new walkup at its Westgate Manor complex, 9560 163 St.

“We had the land, we were going to build something there, and we came across the shipping-container idea.”

Huge numbers of 40-foot-long containers arrive on the West Coast each year carrying the electronics, clothing, car parts and other products North Americans import from Asia. But most aren’t sent back because it’s cheaper to make new ones, Slivinski said Thursday.

While they’ve been turned into garage suites and a hotel in the region, he called his 20-unit project “shipping container 2.0.”

“This is the next stage we’re taking it to, a little larger commercial-level multi-family housing.”
