Edmonton Police Service Northwest Campus more than just a cop shop

The Edmonton Police Service’s new Northwest Campus won’t be your average cop shop.

It aims not only to be the new northwest division station, but a state-of-the-art hub for arrest processing and training, eventually including a new gun range. Police hope to occupy the first phase of the new campus before June 2018.

Lisa Jimo, director of office security management, said the single building at 18350 127 St. NW will encompass three distinct functions — the northwest police station, the arrest processing centre and the new training centre.

“I think we’ve reached the point where we can no longer make do and reorganize and do other things to meet the needs of the force,” Jimo said.

The budget for the first phase of the northwest campus is $106 million, with the money approved in the city’s 2015-18 capital budget.

Acting Supt. Devin LaForce said that initially, police planned to move into the northwest campus in early 2018.

But as it sits now, the project is nearing halfway done and the gun range, which is currently not funded, is to be added after the first phase of construction.

LaForce said part of the delay in starting the project was finding and securing the land.

“By the time we had the money, the land wasn’t available, so we had to go look for some more land,” he said.
