Just wanted to highlight the multiple infill projects in Queen Alexandra (south of Whyte Ave):
4 storey covered in heat pumps and looks to have solar on top.
3 storey apartment building.
Foundations started for cluster housing.
Two other “cluster houses” under construction.
83 unit 6 storey that they’re starting on.
Street that had a bunch of SFHs knocked down and now has the following DPs:
8 units
6 units
8 units
18 units
All together that’s ~200 units.
Also, the Varsity if that gets going.
Also, The Hat should be starting to fill up soon.
Pretty substantial amount of development.
Should be good for Whyte Ave to have such an influx of people in the area!

Up at Cold Lake yesterday for a meeting on the base. Interesting to see 3 tower cranes up and possibly more coming. My escort said there will be a few hundred workers on site this summer as work ramps up on the base rebuild.. Looks like over 1B in work over the next few years. As for Cold Lake itself, had a chance to drive around a bit. it has really grown over the last few years.

Next to the new(ish) fire hall beside the southern base gate is a modular housing development, last I saw it was two structures of about 30 units apiece. These went up years before the modular construction conversation even started, and they went up almost instantly.
Admittedly, they are ugly. But it is a nice case study in the effectiveness of modular housing tech in rapidly building residential capacity, especially in areas with more flexible land use policies like GRAs.

That could be a basses for future Base Housing. With Edmonton Garrison building for 1000 additional and Cold Lake expanding it may be the fastest way. But even the prefab construction they are using in Jasper for the affordable housing could speed things up.

How did progress look? Are they on schedule to welcome first F-35s domestically in 2028?

They've been ready for the F-35s for years now. It's largely federal procurement that's hung that up.
I used to work on the airstrip for the F-18s, and while those are definitely showing their age, the actual base infrastructure is still perfectly usable. Old and riddled with asbestos, but built to last.
EDIT: Airboy's comments are likely more accurate than mine, this was quite some time ago.

New hangars and ready rooms coming, Apparently the Old hangars were not adequate. There were at least 3 tower cranes up already between 2 of the old hangars. Also at least one piling rig. I didn't see work started on the ready rooms yet. They will also replace a number of operational buildings over the next few years, Some are from the original base construction.

For some reason there does not seem any urgency to buy military equipment from the US now. Gee, I wonder why.

Building or renovating the Forward Operating bases may be for other equipment. However the FOB could handle F18, F15 and what ever else the Air National Guards use. The drawings I seem to recall showed a silhouette of an F15 in the hangar bays.
