Back to Bay Street. December 4, 1954: the City sends out photographers to record traffic conditions. As deepend said earlier, a moment in time (LI Mike: enjoy):

And a couple from Yonge and Queen:

here's the Bank of Nova Scotia building as it was originally conceived. so elegant!

bloorspadina.jpg

I think the elegance, and the modernity of the design is highlighted by the contrast with the victorian street clutter. The wooden poles and the streetcar tracks set in granite setts are from a totally different era than the bank and really show it. I think these sorts of photos really allow us to see just how "new" and different buildings like the Scotiabank would have seemed at the time.

Dive hotel, the Inn on Bay has finally closed (hopefully permanently) and it looks like they might restore the building or at least remove that metal cladding.
You can see it in 'thecharioteers' archival photo of Bay & Elm

Changes to Leaside

Some drastic changes are in the works around the former site of Canada Wire & Cable at Laird Dr. and McRae Dr/Wicksteed Ave.

That's the Canada Wire plant behind the aircraft.

I think there have been car washes for as long as we've had cars. Here's a shot from the 20's, not sure of the location:

From the invaluable Panda archive, here's a 1957 view of the Sun Life site ( looking south west near University and Richmond ) where you can see the same roofline ( sans dome ) in the background:

Here, also from Panda, is the Bank of Canada building to the north of Sun Life under construction - with a better view of the car wash / gas station in the background:

Speaking of car washes ------ here's how some were washed:

Great! I love the small groupings of thematic or time-based collections that one can uncover on the archives site…

Some of my favourite ones are the local pop culture images that emerged along with the rising importance of the TTC, and specifically with the construction of the original subway in 1954.

Boy, Simonizing has been around for a long time, I thought it was more recent. I wonder what came first, Simonizing or Martinizing.

Congrats Mustapha!

Hey, i noticed you are approaching "The Big 2-0-0-0-0-0"! that's a lot of views! congratulations on an AMAZING thread.

the ORIGINAL now and then:

date, so I thought I would throw them into a new thread. No rhyme or reason here and I also thought I'd do some obscure locations - the popular locations are already in the Filey books, etc. I'll add as I casually peruse the Toronto archives and run errands around Toronto accompanied by my trusty Fuji F20 camera.

Ford Street, north from Davenport.

Interesting how it was evidently a Chinatown hotel/rooming house from early on.

And of course, that building lasted until relatively recently--demolished 5 yrs or so ago for University Plaza...
