It's clear from the "freestandingness" of Manning Chambers that the Ward's "slum clearance" had already begun.

Magnificent set of the Flatiron site, charioteer. Admirable!
Continues to be my favourite Toronto building.

That last sepia toned shot is killer. The whoosh of movement to the left, the kids staring back at us... fantastic. Hey, wonky telephone poles have been with us a long time! Toronto trademark?

Originally called the "coffin block." I presume because of the old building's shape.

"The current Gooderham building (1892) completely replaced the coffin block (c. 1830s)."

Contrary to popular belief, the current Gooderham building (1892) DID NOT COMPLETELY REPLACE the coffin block (c. 1830s);

The Gooderham Building having only two outside walls, North and South, none being at the West.

But the coffin block was shorter than the Gooderham. Where were additions made to create the Gooderham?

The Coffin Block later included an extention, see S/S 1885.
