A friend recently sent me a link to https://onegalstoronto.wordpress.com/2017/02/11/by-any-other-name/ Fascinating article and the rest of the site is filled with the kinds of posts that may amuse Then-and-Nowers! Enjoy.

Obviously, there was not always a direct connection to Carlton St.

... Frogley's bakery at 750 Yonge. This is the SW corner of Yonge and Yorkville. It's a cookbook store now. Last time I looked - although its been many years - the name was engraved high up on the building.
I can't quite see why you would be 'pained" that there are streets that are not continuous, make odd turns or end at Yonge. They are actually a very good gauge of how our City has developed and often draw attention to long-gone buildings or natural features. If you enjoy 'then and now' you should really like these small hints at our past.So glad they aligned Carlton and College when they did it. Would never be possible today. A lot of the streets that just start and end at Yonge street just pain me.

There is (or was??) the wonderful Park Lots Project website. It seems to be off line at the moment but can be found at the Internet Archive http://web.archive.org/web/20161105072853/http://wendysmithtoronto.com/parklotproject/The reason there aren't any straight through streets between Queen and Bloor is because of the Park Lots - 100 acre lots with 660 feet frontage on Lot/Queen Street. History!
