Surprising to see that these two elegant structures once stood at opposing corners of Melinda at Bay.
General Trust Building and Toronto Evening Telegram Building

Though the Tely was later extended upward and mutilated (clock pediment removed, etc)

Re: Bay/Melinda. A couple of views of the block post-demolition of the Telegram Building:

How interesting would it have been, urbanistically and architecturally, if Melinda had stayed open and all the buildings on the north side were preserved. Commerce Court could have filled the south block to Wellington. Extra bonus: Jordan Street would have stayed open to Wellington and the Ontario Club preserved on the NW corner of Wellington and Jordan. Trade-off: no open space, as at present but both Melinda and Jordan could be pedestrian only....

I like your unique suggestion, thecharioteer. So much history in that neighbourhood!
By the way, is that an inscription?...........I can't make it out.

The no parking signs are gone, the streetlights have gone back to standard, the upper balconies have lost their coverings probably due to the increased shade of the now grown trees, but all else looks the same. Maturation.

Filling in the gap: September 1967, photo by Robert McMann. King-Exhibition streetcar looping via Richmond, Adelaide and Victoria. Took a couple of days to locate this slide.
