There was, originally, an "arcade" running the length of the Yonge St frontage--and it was even maintained in the original College Park retail conversion in the late 70s. But once that failed, it was subdivided for retail/office space et al in the early '00's (and as per condition, such alterations are always meant to be "reversible"). Thus the wooden escalator at the south end wound up as part of the DeBoer's store...

I worked for Eaton's in the early '70. All of the escalators were of the wooden slat style and they had a unique sound. The elevators still had operators and the downtown delivery barn (Hayter St.?) was simply trucks backing into stalls that were designed for horses. It still had the drainage & through system that allowed the manure to be cleaned up, just like a barn.

The Queen St. store was an amalgam of originally several stores and the floor level would change slightly as you crossed into different areas. The College St. store was one fancy building and I'm glad they've largely kept it intact.
