At College Park last week.
[College and Yonge.]
That is one very old escalator.

I always wondered why they never opened a through passage from College to Gerrard on the east side of the building.
If memory serves, there was an escalator with wooden steps at either eatons or simpsons ......the only time I ever saw that was as a child....
I worked for Eaton's in the early '70. All of the escalators were of the wooden slat style and they had a unique sound. The elevators still had operators and the downtown delivery barn (Hayter St.?) was simply trucks backing into stalls that were designed for horses. It still had the drainage & through system that allowed the manure to be cleaned up, just like a barn.
The Queen St. store was an amalgam of originally several stores and the floor level would change slightly as you crossed into different areas. The College St. store was one fancy building and I'm glad they've largely kept it intact.
