I always wondered what had been on that huge block. Cooke Presbyterian Church (1891-1982)

Here is the first 'edition' of the church being built in 1856. (Church named after Henry Cooke, an Ulster Presbyterian.)

DSC: I don't believe that the above photo is of Cooke's Church as it is labeled in the Archives as the "Second United Presbyterian Church", which according to Wikipedia was on Gould Street. The article refers to St. James Square Presbyterian Church on Gerrard as: "replacing a much smaller building on nearby Gould Street that had been built by architect William Hay in 1855."

Hello everyone. I thought I would throw my Then and Now pictures into a new thread. No rhyme or reason here and I also thought I'd do some obscure locations.

I'll add to this thread as I casually peruse the Toronto Archives picture image resources and run errands around Toronto accompanied by my trusty Fuji F20 camera.

Don't think so. Cooke's Presbyterian (where my great grandparents were married) was on the northwest corner of Queen & Mutual.

This is looking southwest (from Church and Dundas) towards FCP under construction, the CN Tower, and Mackenzie house on Bond St.

Going way back (catching up on this thread today). The name change is Loews (Yonge Street) to Yonge, very early 1970's. When 20th Century Theatres changed the name again from Yonge to Elgin in March 1978 with an attempt to show "legitimate" films (they failed) the Colonial was at or near the end of it's life, possibly even closed, but had an entirely different and unattractive frontage on Yonge.

Interesting w/that image that the Loews/Yonge/Elgin was clearly in naming transition then (judging from the sign pylon)

20th Century Theatre's downtown action house, The Downtown Theatre, closed about 1973/4 and was converted to retail uses. A similar vantage point from 1949.

These pictures bring back a lot of great memories! Seeing the pinball spot arcade. Spent many a day in there growing up and the fact we knew the owner Starvin Marvin . He lived in my building, he was pretty good to us kids even watched out for us.

Though I love looking at old photos of Toronto, I suggest we need to remember that this thread is "Toronto photographs : Then and Now" - if you are contributing an old photo it would be good to also contribute a modern one (or vice versa). There are other threads, here and elsewhere, where one can just post old (or new) photos but when Mustapha started this wonderful thread it was to see change and compare eras.
