If Hazel McCallion can still bike to City Hall all the way from Streetsville, I'm sure that being a mayor is not too much for her to handle...

Who to blame for the current situation? I won't call Hazel blameless, but the trouble on council has been clearly stirred up by one individual who wants to be mayor so badly she can't stand it, but doesn't seem to have the maturity that I, for one, would want.

Yeah, I like that one individual even less than Hazel McCallion.

Surely the trouble on council is that Hazel has been involved in business deals with a huge conflict of interest. If councillors didn't point that out, they should be thrown out of office.

Are there any serious candidates running against her?

^Not much the councilors can do if the public simply doesn't care. Despite a lot of media attention regarding the corruption of the current council in Vaughan, they're probably all going to be re-elected with the exception of Mayor Jackson (who will be ousted by Bevilacqua).

The website stopcarolynparrish.com has published a list of councilor candidate they endorse for each ward. In other words, these are the puppets of Hazel McCallion:

Ward 1: Jim Tovey http://www.jimtovey.ca/
Ward 2: Pat Mullin http://www.patmullin.ca/
Ward 3: Chris Fonseca http://www.electfonseca.ca/
Ward 4: Nance MacDonald http://www.nancemacdonald.com/
Ward 5: Simerjit Kaur http://simerkaur.com
Ward 6: Ron Starr http://www.ronstarr.ca
Ward 7: Louroz Mercader http://lourozmercader.com/
Ward 8: Katie Mahoney http://www.katiemahoney.ca/
Ward 9: Pat Saito http://www.ward-9.com/
Ward 10: Patrick Mendes http://www.votepatrickmendes.com/
Ward 11: Christine Simundson http://www.christinesimundson.com/

Not surprised to see Louroz on the list. I guess Hazel really is a "good friend" of his after all...

I'm in Ward 11, so I will avoid voting for Christine Simundson.

I would not be too hasty to refer to any of these as "puppets". Jim Tovey, to pick one, has a credible record in the Lakeview community, and led a very effective campaign for the elimination of the coal-fired power plant, as well as planning redevelopment on the east waterfront, and some other things. As for Louroz, who used to be a pretty active participant in this forum, he has been pretty heavily involved in the community as well. I for one think it's time to replace the long-standing deadwood in Ward 7 (unfortunately not my ward), and we could certainly do worse than Louroz.

As for Ward 6 ... (Carolyn Parrish's ward, for those who don't know), her main opponent has 30 years of community involvement, including a previous term on council, former head of Miss. Hydro, and a leading role years ago in establishing the Credit Valley Hospital.

I don't know all of these people, but several are highly credible.

I was not particularly happy when Carolyn Parrish was elected four years ago. She came with an unfortunate record. However, I hoped she might surprise us with some positive contributions. It hasn't happened. She continues to pull immature antics, looking for headlines, and it's difficult to point to positive things on her behalf.

I don't really have any problem with these candidates other than the fact that they are part of Hazel's desperate cling to power, or at least solidify her power. I think it is extremely corrupt what Hazel is trying to do here. In other circumstances, I would have definitely preferred Ron Starr over Carolyn Parrish, and Louroz over Nando Iannicca. Parrish is sort of like the female Rob Ford of Mississauga, a loudmouth and always trying to stir up conflict and controversy, and I don't like Rob Ford.

Mississauga News has a pretty good run down of the mayoral race and each ward for this election. They suggest that Hazel's time as mayor should come to and end, and the three candidates they recommend are: Dave Cook, George Winter, and Peter Orphanos. As I aid earlier, my personal choice is Peter Ophanos, but all seem like good choices, better than Hazel. All three of them are definitely better than the three mayoral candidates that our brothers and sisters in Toronto are stuck with...

Always interesting to see the News endorsements. Keep in mind that they are part of the Toronto Star corporate group and their mayoral endorsement (same as Star's) is not a surprise. Interesting that they spread their endorsement over three candidates in Ward 3 (my ward), and I agree in at least two of those three. We're fortunate to have some good people running.

Very interesting that they endorsed Louroz Mercader in Ward 7, rather than the incumbent. I fully agree. As I already had mentioned, the incumbent here is unimpressive and has been around too long. Best wishes Louroz!!

Also interesting that they did not endorse Sue McFadden, an incumbent who is strongly anti-Hazel. The News has a history of endorsing incumbents, so it's good to see them break with that for once.

Sorry to see them endorse Carolyn Parrish, who I really don't like, if that is not already evident.

How are Louroz's chances in ward 7? We've known him as FutureMayor on this forum for the last decade. It would be interesting to see him make a step in that direction by being elected city councillor.

Nando Iannicca's angry diss on UTM students and the NDP last year probably didn't win him any votes.

George Winter seems like a good candidate. Then again, I live in Toronto so its a bit of an outsiders opinion

Change is Coming to Ward 7, Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Region!

Louroz hasn't posted here in ages - must be all the campaigning!

Hi Towered and UT Friends:

Yes! I haven't posted in ages, however I've become a dedicated lurker and only read what is being posted on the forum.

UT continues to be a great source of inspiration and learning for me on how I can improve and develop my community.

I've been honoured and humbled by all the support I've recieved to date, including the kind words by MetroMan, Observer Walt, and doady on here.

This has been a decade in the making for me, along with 10 months of hardcore campaigning.

I hope to make everyone proud and MAKE HISTORY by being the FIRST UT member to be elected onto a City Council!

Please don't forget to vote on Monday, October 25th, Polls Open from 10 am - 8pm.

Louroz

Maybe you are joking, Louroz, cuz I actually felt kind of bad for my comments. But I do think you are the best candidate for Ward 7, despite my desire for Hazel to lose, so I apologize. Good luck with the election, I hope you continue to post here and not forget about us.
