LOL, thats so true. They complain when we have no sidewalks, they complain when we build big sidewalks... it looks like we cant win.

Why, it's almost as if people want things to be human-scaled.

Bizarre.

Seriously though, overly wide sidewalks are no good... gives a feeling of desolation. Plenty of examples on Bay St.

I like the new sidewalk and planters. Big, but I can see it working well when both sides of the road are filled in with development. Let's just hope it's good development!

By the way, Solstice, on Burnhamthorpe (technically on Webb, I guess), is now under construction and over 70% sold.

Eve is nearing exterior completion - looks like only a few floors of windows left to install.

Absolute tower 2 is topped out as well.

Quote: This will be a major street in "downtown" Mississauga one day. Remember over 20,000 people will line both sides of the road in over 40 towers. Those sidewalks will be well used in the future.

Only if they put in retail at the bottom of future buildings. The ones pictured have none.

Exactly. People need a reason to be on the streets and there does not appear to be any in those pictures. Let's admit it: most of those condo dwellers will be taking the elevator to the underground parking and using their car for travel. Many will probably never use the sidewalks in front of their own building.

...until such time as there is walkable retail, and the programming in the square will help significantly this year.

There does not appear to be any space or design for a density of decent retail to warrant much strolling to 'check out the shops.' Further, the mall and surrounding big box stores have killed any chance of retail, like a Gap or Best Buy, to even approach this area (further, the retail spaces that are being built, appear to be for the size of small stores or cleaners).

The wide sidewalk, absence of trees and setback of lamp posts and fire hydrant scream "future road widening"

One Park Tower will have retail space, and there is only one other building there that is located on Confederation.

There isn't any reason to drive on Confederation either. The street was just built and mostly undeveloped.

Further, the mall and surrounding big box stores have killed any chance of retail, like a Gap or Best Buy,

Gap and Best Buy are big box stores... What you say makes no sense since Square One is right there, with tons of non-big box stores and Square One seems to be doing okay despite being "surrounded by big stores" as you falsely claim.

What? I don't even understand what you are saying.

I did not say that the mall will suffer because of big box stores. I said that retail under those condos will suffer because of the mall and the big box stores (and the small sizes of the spaces).

How many of you have actually visited the site in the pictures?

I bet none of you have, so I wouldn't draw sudden and unfair conclusions of Mississauga City Centre based on a select few photos.

For you information:

1) Less than a year ago there use to be a swamp where that road and sidewalks are located. The road isn't even open yet, the trees have not been planted and banners and art work installed.

2) Only one building out of 40 planned towers has been completed on this road which is that Daniel's low rise retirement building you see.

3) The city has mandated that ground floor retail line this road. The 38 Storey One Park Tower currently under construction to the north of the retirement building and future City Centre Park includes a ground floor 150 seat resturaunt which will have a patio overlooking the new urban park.

I wouldn't call a floor space that seats 150 people small by any means.

I have to agree with officedweller, the wide sidewalks are scary for whats possibly to come. Maybe its because i've idled too much in traffic through the periods that hwy 10 always seemed to be under construction during its widening. If they did widen, it would definately be a bad watershed turning point for the area. However, if they did add more street beautification, it could be great. Even if the local amendities did not create street traffic, I bet some nice public benches with street ornaments would attract many people reading books or just hanging out there on a nice sunny day.

I think more people have driven by the sites in the picture without stopping.
