Wow...

More interesting Lost Toronto pics...

Charioteer and Everyone: I found those Yorkville pics interesting-definitely early 80s era to me-it reminds me of exploring that neighborhood myself...
The pics I found most interesting were ones showing Ontario plates-like the Corvette with plate #RAJ*399 - issued about 1982-83 so the Summer of 1983 makes sense there...
The other pic I found very interesting was the corner pic with plate# OSJ*065
clearly visible with the TTC trackless trolleybus-is that the BAY route? Looks mid-80s to me...
I - like others here - certainly noticed the leggy lady with the pigtail hairdo...
The Christmastime shop windows are interesting noting the time period of those pics...
LI MIKE

LI Mike - RAJ-399 would have been issued a little earlier than that - probably 1980. I got my first car in February 1983 with a VJH series plate, and the slogan change to "Yours to Discover" was at TMB in early 1982.

And of course thanks to "Today's Special" we know the Simpson's toy department used to employ at least one mannequin who comes to life at night.

Unrelated, but I love how your username mis-spells both "Niagara" and "Adelaide". Intentional, yes?

Going to change my username to "Younge & Eglington".

As Charioteer pointed out--the mail order catalogues produced by the big department stores were another important element in the visual culture of early consumerism. the first Eaton's catalogue is (i think) from around 1880. originally they were printed on inexpensive pulp paper, and were quite text heavy with simple line art illustrations. but by the 1930s they were luxe and weighty tomes, sometimes numbering over 500 pages…these are all from the 1935 Eaton's Catalogue.

More neat Lost Toronto pics and info...

Deepend: Neat pics from Eaton's 1935 Catalog-interesting 1930s fashions and those prices then are something else! Inflation was not that big a deal back then...a nice Christmastime find!

Stumack: I may have been a little off concerning the Ontario license plates date-wise but I recall that when the Plate to Owner change was made in the early 80s Ontario went thru their plate series issuance slower when plates stayed with vehicles. When exactly did PTO begin if you know?

I now remember that TMB was indeed the change point where Ontario changed their plate slogan from KEEP IT BEAUTIFUL to YOURS TO DISCOVER - I remember and still have other items with that tourism slogan.

I also recall that Ontario began their staggered registration program around the same time period-did that go along with the plate slogan change?

Most of that clothing wouldn't look bad today. It would look elegant even. Except for the breeches.:)
