Then. 'Melrose Gates' it says at the bottom of the photo. The gates stood at the corner of present day St. Germain Avenue. See that big old house in the distance? It's still there.

This is a great thread. Please keep the pictures coming. I had no idea Yonge transformed so much, even since the 1920's.
 
Aug 28, a few additions:

Yonge street west side, a block north of Lawrence. This is the old 'Atkinson' general store. Note the Chiclets shipping box. Note the relocation of the streetcar tracks from the west side of the street to the middle of the street. More than a few people must have been hit by the radial car as it passed so close to the shops and homes. Am I boring you yet?

Thanks for reading these everyone.

Here's an old theatre that disappeared about 25 years ago. It was actually 2 theatres inside. Quite nice but sightlines were poor in these old theatres; if someone tall sat in front of you it wrecked your view.
