Plans include a new inpatient care tower with new and expanded operating rooms, a new emergency department, and the addition of over 100 new inpatient beds, which will bring the total number of beds at the hospital to more than 500.

Renovations to the existing building will also expand key services, including medical device processing, laboratory, and pharmacy.

“With the generous support of the Ontario Government, NYGH is moving forward with the largest hospital expansion since we opened our doors more than 50 years ago,” said NYGH President and CEO, Karyn Popovich. “Our leading-edge New Patient Care Tower will allow NYGH to meet growing community needs, and deliver an outstanding patient experience and the highest standards of care for generations to come.”

The province also announced that it would be building a new 384-bed long-term care home at NYGH as part of the government’s $6.4 billion commitment to build more than 30,000 net new beds by 2028 and 28,000 upgraded long-term care beds across the province. This will include an allocation for 192 new beds and 160 upgraded beds which are currently located in a long-time care home within the hospitals Senior’s Health Centre.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2024 and be completed in summer 2026.

...this LTC site was originally going to be on the HOUSING NOW site on the City lands on the south side of Esther Shiner - but now it has been moved to the hospital-owned lands on the North side.

This means that the FULL 8.55 acres at 251 ESTHER SHINER (Works Yard) is now available to the HOUSING NOW program. It opens up a lot more Affordable-Housing opportunities on the site now.
