Yep, on the bus today i counted 8 people not wearing masks. ( all high school kids) TTC lets them on...... On Via Rail nonmask passengers will require a doctor's note on letterhead to get away with not wearing masks now. TTC should be doing the same.

This new VIA rule must just be a clarification of existing policy. They have been requiring masks for a while. I was on a train a few weeks ago and we were stopped in Brampton for over half an hour while the police were called to escort someone off the train who was refusing to wear a mask.

Good! the majority of people would be ok with that. I really can’t get over the utter stupidity of “”anti-maskers.”” The other week i saw a few from the downtown protest get on a streetcar, mask less of course. What do anti-maskers think the real motive is? What, besides slowing the spread of COVID, do they think the government has to gain by getting people to wear masks when they're going to be around other people?

Our daycare had rigid guidelines at the start of September: Temperature checks, no symptoms without a covid test etc. They have already devolved to nothing except a daily form you need to submit, basically a declaration that your kid has no symptoms and you checked their temperature. This is the kind of failed system you get when everything is filtered through a legal paradigm.

In pages past I mentioned I’m very interested in Germany’s numbers. They have a superior system to ours but maybe in a more challenging geographic context. Well, they’re going parabolic now in new cases. That’s a worrying sign. It would suggest we will be doing the same maybe starting in the first week of November. Hope I’m wrong but we would be talking about thousands of cases a day in Ontario alone... well that is if we actually test people.

The LTC Commission appointed by Ford as made interim recommendations due to urgency, amidst a second wave. Full report is still due in early 2021.

I won't repost all the recommendations, but here are a few worth highlighting:

2.While all witnesses agreed on the need for staffing flexibility given the 24/7 nature of homes’ operations, more full-time positions must be created to ensure staffing stability and retention, and resident continuity of care.

* I like this one because of the bolded

3.Beyond these initial steps, identify the permanent investments required to develop and implement a comprehensive human resources strategy that addresses the full range of staffing issues in the sector. The ministry’s Long-Term Care Staffing Study, released in July 2020, identifies the best path forward. Further “study” of the Study is not necessary. What is required is the Study’s timely implementation

4.Consistent with that study, the Commission recommends a minimum daily average of four hours of direct care per resident. The government needs to increase permanent funding for more nurses and support staff, to enable homes to increase their staff to resident ratio, and provide more hours of care, based on residents’ needs.

5.Given the essential role of families and caregivers in supporting not just physical care needs but the psycho-social well-being of residents, we reinforce the calls from residents, families and caregivers to ensure that families and caregivers have ongoing, safe and managed access to long-term care residents.

Apparently 4.6 million people have entered Canada since the march pandemic “lockdown”. That’s about 22,000 people per day.

A comment previously regarding the Australian experience brought up the topic of geographic isolation. Canada, while somewhat geographically isolated has neither closed it’s borders nor “locked-down” in any real globally comparative sense. These concepts are sensationalized here for effect but in truth we have really only imposed some limited restrictions.

In todays episode of anecdotal accounts: the patio across the street from my office was packed like a sardine can earlier. Line-up, some masks, some no masks, average distance between heads about 2 feet. Makes sense it was a beautiful warm Autumn evening in the city.

That's what Doug Ford's and Dr. William's "plateau" looks like, folks.

Ford needs to cancel trick or treating this year. We don't need crowds of kids and parents going door to door touching candy distributed by other people.

Trick or treat in and on itself isn't a huge issue; it's the pre-parties and meetups that is. In any case, he and his government need to be doing a lot more than dealing with Halloween instead of playing stupid games with legislation by stealth.

From CBC:

The pleading by Halton is pathetic.
