Brookfield Place was completed and open for business in the mid to late '80s. It was formerly named the World Financial Center.
It consists of four high-rise office towers, with the tallest one having 40 floors and a 3-story glass-enclosed atrium called the Winter Garden.. The complex is part of Battery Park City. It was built on newly acquired landfill. The dirt that was excavated from spot where the former Twin Towers was built and once stood was placed there to open the door for additional real estate for office buildings.
During the 09-11-01 terror attacks, and after the Twin Towers fell, steel and debris had heavily damaged the buildings so much that the city feared that they themselves might fall. Steel falling from the collapsing twin towers were shot over into the Brookfield towers, and it looked as though the buildings would have had to be dismantled and rebuilt. But after the city had the towers carefully evaluated & surveyed, it was then decided that the buildings were still strurally sound & could be saved and they were nursed back to good health to look as they originally did before the terror attacks. Winter Garden was heavily damaged and practically destroyed! It was dismantled, rebuilt to look the same as the original one and had reopened on 09-11-02, one year to the day.
As of late, Winter Garden has been given a facelift. New things were added and Winter Garden was expanded and rehabbed to also accommodate new access to the new recently opened underground PATH Connector Concourse. so that people can access Winter Garden or the PATH Station without ever having to go outdoors unless they choose to. Also, new shops and eateries are slated to open in the drive to attract more tourists & visitors and open more places to shop. Two elevators were added, giving people in wheelchairs better access to and from the PATH Connector Concouse. New escalators & regular stairways were added for those desiring access to the PATH Staion. Two giant straw-basket-type-looking steel columns help support the ceiling and roof of the expanded area. Originally, Apple Computer had planned to put a store in that same spot, but that drew strong oposition & outrage from area residents living near Ground Zero.
It was at first, decided that the wide semi-curcular stairs inside Winter Garden that lead to & from a stage-like platform where the free concerts are given were to be removed, but this decision drew strong oposition and outrage from residents living close by near Ground Zero. So the city had to back off and the stairs remain there unscathed.
It was then decided by the developer (Brookfield) of the complex to rename the complex and called it Brookfield Place upon completion of the renovating process.
