Playgrounds full of kids keep the druggies away. I saw the park yesterday and I was very impressed with it all. When I left the park I heard a basketball bouncing on the sidewalk along Jasper Ave and saw a group of kids heading towards the park. Never in my life have I heard a basketball bounce in downtown! This reminds me of the time I saw people walking their dogs for the first time in the warehouse district.

One thing I wonder about is the dog park placement. Maybe they chose the NW to be farther from Alex decouteu. But the SE corner by BPs would have helped a lot with noise for residential buildings and spread out the traffic from the playground. I’d imagine those are the 2 biggest draws and they’re both in the NW corner.
The condos in the NW might have a less pleasant experience noise wise now…

What has happened to the anything goes at the park crowd? David A and I were the only one who thought it wasn't a good idea to allow people to do anything at the park anytime they wanted. Now everybody is all about security at the park.

You either have a selective memory or you're suffering from amnesia. Nobody advocated for attendants in the pavilion and there was a consensus for 24/7 park access. The City thought better, so what do you have to say for yourself?

I think the tradeoff for the Monaco building is a positive one. That building recently got a major renovation done and replaced its slider windows with crank style so the noise won’t be so bad. I know I’d take the noise and activity for that view any day. And the owners in that building deserve that break too.

I moght have never said it in this thread, but I'm certainly all for having attendants. They vastly improve the visitor experience both by their surveillance, and by keeping the washrooms clean, stocked, and in good order.
As for the hours, I'm also completely supportive of pavilions like this having hours of operation; they should only be open when the city can staff them. But the same does not go for the park itself; people who are enjoying the space at night the same as they would have during the day should not be kicked out just because of the time.

Random thought but any way the City can request Google to update their satellite view over downtown? Judging by the progress on the Parks this must have been from right before they broke ground June 2024.

Went for my first visit over lunch yesterday…I’m very impressed. It does seem bigger in person and I could see this becoming a real meeting place for all kinds of folks, any given time of day. There aren’t too many places downtown that feel this relaxed and peaceful, in my opinion. I’m an optimist at heart but I do think that this park will regularly attract a lot of avg folks which will keep trouble away for the most part. What an incredible new addition to dt…full marks for CoE (which doesn’t get enough credit for the Herculean effort it took to pull this off, in my opinion)

Agreed. And whenever I worry about how wee the little trees are, I remember watching from my old condo the planting of the baby elms by the federal building on 108 st and how big and lovely they are today. Or the trees at Alex Decoteau park. Time flies and trees grow and this is a fabulous space that'll just get better!

I haven't looked back at the posts, but I recall the discussion involved fire pits and also hours of operation. Some people seemed to want a very uncontrolled space with few or no restrictions which may have worked elsewhere in a different time, but seemed idealistic to me in the current place and situation. So far, so good, perhaps in part due to the staff on site. The city seems to be taking security seriously here.

A simple noise complaint becomes difficult for police to investigate and "remedy" if the park were to remain open 24/7. It's too easy for offenders to deny a complaint brought forward against them. Offenders can claim that they aren't doing anything wrong and that they have the right to be in the park. Park hours that are stated gives the police grounds to kick people out of the park or arrest them if they refuse to leave.
