What exactly is the deal with La Defense? Is it like a second downtown of paris? Does it have much in terms of street activity and night life? It seems that all I see of La Defense are pictures of the skyscrapers, the arch and some various public spaces.

La Défense is Paris' financial district, located just outside Paris proper on the west side of the city. The district is centered on a huge pedestrian promenade with skyscrapers on both side.

I didn't return at night so I'm not sure what kind of nightlife there is, but I expect the financial district to be a much quieter place at night.

Apparently it has some decent shopping... some malls or something.

Think in terms of Canary Wharf, Parisian-style (and starting about a quarter century earlier!)
