The Esso building which was located on 112th Street & Jasper Ave. The sign atop of the building was easily viewed from the former Molson Brewery (far right corner) in the photo above.

@KyleBlanchett , thank you for these "Past vs. Present" gem's. ^ I Can't remember that Esso building, and not sure when it was raised. It definitely would have been an improvement (if it had been viable for a makeover), compared to what is now present.

That 22' tall letter "E" would be have been pretty cool relocated to our 104th street Neon Sign museum... but the 4 letters together would have taken up half the block I wonder what Imperial ever did with that sign when they relocated?

I cant remember when Edmonton had any oil related major office activity...besides leaving. Insert (pissed off) face!

Founded by Edmonton icon Louis Podersky, Podersky’s Furniture changed locations numerous times; from downtown on Jasper Avenue to a prominent Whyte Ave intersection.

I think this building was called the Centennial Building and was entirely office prior to it's conversion to residential in the early 2000s. It is now called the Churchill and is a retirement home.

Here are 3 shots from the old Vista 33 observation floor in the TELUS Tower. These were taken in the early/mid 1980s. Some interesting things to note: I think they had just finished tearing down that awful boxy addition to the Mac. It still looks like a bit of a deconstruction site where the park is now and I think the Mac was actually closed/boarded up at this point. In the shot looking west, I think the hoarding/construction fences for Manulife Phase II are lying on the ground. You can see the trains on the CN rail tracks way off in the distance. It looks like what is now the Bay in CC Mall is under construction (would have been the Eatons department store at that time).

A couple shots of the Convention Center from the south. Again, these would have been taken mid 1980s. Canada Place is not there...but the ORIGINAL Alberta Hotel is!

Jim Wensley designed the Convention centre building... and it still holds up. He, Don Bittorf and Peter Hemmingway were the Edmonton-based architectural notables of the 60s, 70s, & 80s. Jim's accomplishments in Edmonton include Shaw Conference Centre, Scotia Place, Oxford Towers, the original Southgate Shopping Centre (allied with Don Bittorf) and Mayfair Golf and Country Club. Don Bittorf was best remembered for Canadian Western Bank Place, Dickensfield Extended Care facility, U of A Faculty of Law Center, Edmonton Art Gallery, and the downtown Westin Hotel. Peter Hemmingway -- Coronation Pool, Stanley Engineering Building, and the Muttart Conservatory glass pyramids.

Oh, and of course I should mention Douglas Cardinal who, at the time, had his practice based in Edmonton. He was a young, burgeoning upstart at the time and he still has a practice today in Ottawa. I have had the pleasure of working with him on many projects.

The crane I believe was on the second phase of the Citadel. The building to the right was the old Police Headquarters And I think I can make out the old Municipal court house the the right of that.
