Good question.

I read somewhere that they also might use bi-level gates to dispense people into the secure area before Canadian customs - they have to run through a habitrail above the crowds and clear customs. That could be an explanation as well.

No, that is not the jetway or gate(s) for the A380. The 2nd level there is mainly for arriving passengers to get them up to the 2nd level where they will proceed to Canada Customs. The T1 Hammerhead will have 2 gates equiped for the A380, which each gate having 3 jetways (most likely 1 for the upper deck, and 2 for the lower deck). As shown in the below pic, they're gates 173 and 175.

Thanks for the updated pics! I can't wait until the rest of T2 is demolished next year!

interesting.. so does that mean international gates will all have 2 jetways, one on the lower level for departures and one going up to the 2nd level for arrivals?

^ No. The hammer head gates have two components. The glassed part of the hammerhead gate is two levels and contains stairs, escalators, etc so that arriving international passengers are on the second floor before entering the hammerhead from the gates. The unglassed portion of the gate is one level mounted at a similar height to all of the glassed portions of the gate. This design eliminates the headaches caused at many airports where people arriving walk through a glass corral separating the departures waiting area and the actual gate and use of the gate is blocked until the walkway is empty. This happened in T2 and some other airports avoid this by having stairs or escalators at every gate but those airports usually have difficulty with wheelchairs since it isn't cost effective to put an elevator at every gate. This allows a few gates to share the same elevator and escalator but not block the flow of departures.

Thanks for the pics again yyzer. Can't wait till it is done and all flights can avoid the embarrasing T2.

Pearson Pier F Update - Sept 2

Hi Everyone, it's been a while, just a quick update on Pier F, things are progressing well, they are now finishing the tarmac on the south-east side, directly across from old terminal 2...and apparently still on track for a January 27, 2007 opening

does anyone know if Toronto Pearson's will be able to accomodate the new A380 (runway lenght/width) and will there be double-level gate bridges? I was reading this article about changes made to Singapore Airport and it was quite impressive.
www.a380.singaporeair.com/news_home_20060822.html
I would be nice to make these changes while we're at it...

Runway shoulders have been widened by 4.5 metres on each side. The total width of the runway is now 75 metres. This not only provides more room for the passage of the aircraft but also greater resistance to erosion from the aircraft engine blast. The pavement at taxiway junctions has also been widened some 6 metres to accommodate the aircraft's wider turning circle.

At the passenger terminals, 11 aircraft parking bays have been modified to accommodate the A380. The equipment staging areas (the tarmac areas around the stationary aircraft for service vehicles) have been enlarged by 30 per cent to accommodate the extra equipment required to attend to the aircraft.

The A380 will require more than just space. New underground refueling hydrants have been added to A380 parking bays and new, more powerful air-tugs (the low sitting vehicles used to push and pull aircraft into and out of confined spaces) have also been acquired to maneuver the A380.

Not only that, since the A380 has an upper deck that runs along its entire length, a number of gates have been reconfigured with an additional, third aerobridgeto provide direct access to the upper deck.

I think 2 of the slots at Pier F is designed to handle A380.

Thanks YYZ! Always enjoy these.

Any idea if there are going to be public trials again for this phase? If so, when?

I would doubt that there will be public trials. Most of the major systems that needed testing are located in the Central Processor area which opened as part of the first phase. There isn't really much in the way of important systems in this new phase. Plus there's the security considerations of doing a trial in an operating airport.

Thanks for the updates, yyz! Always appreciated.

Any news on whether we'll be getting any A380s? The Etihad flight and maybe Lufthansa to Frankfurt seem like the best bets.

Plans as announced have no A380s flying to Toronto. However, Montreal will be getting the A380 for Air France flights to Paris.

When Emirates shows up (probably as soon as bilateral is renegotiated), you'll probably see A380...
