cassiusa, you need to underexpose about -1 stop: you're lights are too bright, and the dark not dark enough. your camera's evaluative metering usually gets this wrong, because it tries to over expose the dark areas to get the detail. you may want to invest in a tripod, too, if you like doing long exposures.
