what a gem!

Excellent photos as always, flar! Quebec must have really fallen in love with brutalism – as is evident in Gatineau, Montreal and the capital.

Fantastic set of photos.

Great tour. Definitely touristy, but still cool, and unique in North America.

Nice to see they've managed to save at least the facade of the armoury.

It all seems like a bit of a faux-French fantasy. Nice though. I guess it is tourism that allows for such beautifully well-maintained public spaces. More tourists for Toronto please!

it is nothing of the sort. it is a town built by french canadians, and the seat of government for the province of quebec. they came by the architecture every bit as honestly as torontonians did that of, say, U of T.

as an aside, quebec is growing faster than ever, and has one of the better-performing urban economies in eastern canada. i am not sure if there isn't some residual upper-lower canada thing at work here: for some reason, in toronto, montreal is a decaying racist hulk that is being divinely punished for the sin of separatism, while quebec is a piece of disneyland wedding cake that would be dead were it not for the attentions of american and english-canadian tourists.

i'm not even french-canadian, but no wonder it was as it was.

The Walled City and central Quebec City: Europe in North America? I say Yes!

Flar: Neat tour of the central area of Quebec City including the Walled City...good memories from my 1985 visit!

I noticed the Chateau Frontenac and Quebec's National Assembly (Parliament) standing out here...

I remember feeling out of place somewhat as an anglophone here but I also feel that the Walled City is as close to a European-type city as we can get in North America...it was a neat area to explore!

One of my memories of that 1985 visit is finding a French-text Coca-Cola plastic sign on the street "Savorez Coca-Cola" it read
and when I got back to NYC I gave it to a collector I knew in trade who was most impressed with it and the 10 ounce cans I brought back on that trip...

I also liked the lower area near the Levis ferry...did you take any pics of VIA's Gare Du Palais station?
I missed its re-opening by a couple of months...VIA served Quebec City by way of Ste. Foy then with a CTCUQ bus connection...

If you can number these pics...I'd like to comment on them when I have time at a later date...LI MIKE

Tewder: Quebec City is probably as authentic as you can get these days. It's touristy for sure, but refreshingly different. I highly recommend a trip. Just as Ottawa benefits from being the nation's capital, Quebec City benefits from being Quebec's national capital (and Quebec's government does operate as a national government).

In economic terms, the city as a whole is quite well rounded, there is tourism, government, a major university, healthcare serving a large region, and still quite a bit of industry.

LIMike: I didn't get a shot of the train station. I will definitely be visiting Quebec City again because there is a lot more to explore. It's been a while since I posted here, apologies for forgetting to number the pics. I will get around to it sometime when I'm at home.

Right, that's very true - but we equivalents ... but they're not downtown, think of St. Clair and Bathurst - a couple other areas, as well - a little bit taller though and doesn't quite meet the sidewalk.
Montreal is similar i.e. it has dense areas of 4/5 story buildings which Toronto just doesn't ... again, for Toronto though, it's the mid city apartment blocks.

We must love our houses!

I should make one thing clear ... this is 100% an appearance issue, I can tell you right now those areas of Montreal (and other American cities even i.e. Boston / a couple others) are in no way more vibrant, frankly they all have less street activity as most of these areas are 100% residential, there's little in the way of life - I can even recall a few streets in Montreal that are just like this but I can't recall the names :)

I agree it is nice though - again those, none of these cities have the densities we do in terms of high rises - but they're scattered and clustered - probably a result of all the lower density housing we have downtown.

Beautiful stuff as always flar and thanks for taking the time to post all your pics. Can we take that entire street in pic #13 and ship it off to Toronto?

Quebec city seems to be very economically sound.

You hardly see a poor person wandering the street, people look happy and all the stores and malls and the city as a whole is buzzing. Crime is minimal and murders are rare. The air is nice and fresh...
Me and my parents went their and it was a great 4 days, very refreshing and lots of fun. My dad said he would move their if he ever learned French.

The place gets a massive amount of tourists, mostly Americans and people from Ontario.

The city has a bright future as it is in a very good place financially and it will continue to attract millions of tourists every year.

Very touristy, but that's what the economy strives on. That's what allows for what looks to be great maintenance of their downtown area. This goes the same for places like SF, and to a lesser degree New York.

Great shots though, it's truely like a little France in NA.
