My mum once drove from Toronto to Montreal in under 3 hours...
Even between Dorval and Pickering (486 km, and thus 53 km shorter than MTRL-TRTO via the Kingston Sub), this would equate an average speed in excess of 162 km/h. Not impossible, but highly concerning (if true)…

The way some people round down prices (like calling something $3 that is $3.99 ) there is a good chance that she did it in 3 hours and 59 minutes and called it 3 hours. LOL

She left from Etobicoke, not Pickering 🤣

And no, she was not concerned 🤣

My father did North Bay to London in 3 hours... back in the 80s, before much of the 4laning was done.

And he did it in a Chevette!


Getting back to the challenge of the tunnel.... Besides the additional cost, what is the issue with digging a deeper tunnel to bypass all that infrastructure?

My grandpa drove from Timmins to Windsor in 2 hours back in the 30s before the roads were paved. In a Model T!
 
What are the chances the Quebec government says they'll contribute the funding required to ensure the line reaches Gare Centrale. They're not shy when it comes to deficits.

HFR will of course reach Gare Centrale, using the same route as how current trains reach it. It’s Quebec City that won’t get reached…

The Underground City and the Autoroute Ville-Marie are indeed in the path for almost any alternative tunnel alignment:

The only path I could possibly see would be underneath Robert-Bourassa, but that would imply closing it between Saint-Antoine and René-Levesque:
