I had an occasion to get to Modus at King and York this week for a free dinner.
I have been there twice before, both times pre-pandemic, and I found it rather mediocre, and so did the others I went with then, especially given it has financial district pricing.

However, this time I was surprised. The previously bland and unintersting menu had been shaken up with more modern offerings, and the food quality has improved dramatically. The service was also exceptional, and the new night time decor in the restaurant with dimmed house lights and LED table lamps with red light-shades harkened back to those old-school Italian restaurants while still having a modern vibe. It was great. The grilled calamari appetizer was cooked perfectly, soft and sweet and that's a great way to judge a place as non-deep fried calamari is very difficult to get right.

Fet Zun, at Dupont & Spadina, by Anthony Rose's restaurant group is closing after 10 years. Their last day of service will be on Dec 22nd, 2024:

Quick shout out to Thai restaurant Isaan Der in the Junction. Had dinner there last week and the food was amazing. Might have even been the best Thai food I've had yet. I had the panang curry and mum had the breaded basa (which I ate half of 🤣 ). Both dishes were so, so delicious.

I had a birthday dinner for myself here around 5 or 6 years ago. I personally liked the food and it's a well rated restaurant overall, but for whatever reason some of my other dining companions found it underwhelming. Oh well, can't impress everyone lol

I like this place called Lao Thai at Queen & Gladstone which is ran by 2 sisters. Small and simple interiors, but good Laotian and Thai food at reasonable prices. That chicken with fried rice was quite memorable.

LOL.

I get that Toronto Life's brand doesn't exactly scream "integrity" but they should probably mark it a little more clearly that this is an ad, not a review.
