I was actually wondering the same thing. But they are rebuilding the Steeles exit, which looks like it just started. But yeah the extra lanes in the centre look like they just need a quick pave and will be done. If only it were that simple.

I believe adding the extra lanes is only half the battle here. Besides rebuilding the Steeles interchange, I believe the Courtney Park and Derry interchanges are to be rebuilt as well. I would imagine this will take some time.

I may be way off here but I think what they are doing is adding 2 lanes in each direction (one HOV and one regular) between the 401 and Queen Street.....since the middle part (that I agree "looks" simple) only has room for 2 lanes (presumably one in each direction) it means the additional two lanes would have to be on the outsides of the two directions.....and that means rebuilding/reconfiguring all of the ramps/exits/bridges between the 401 and Queen.

Again, I could be wrong but that is what I think is going on and will take until 2018 to complete.

I believe the contract involves a complete rebuild of the roadbed, widening of bridge structures, interchange reconfigurations, etc. Not surprising to me that its 4 summer construction project.

I guess that is why my road-building career never progressed past the sand box when I was a kid!

EDIT: had a real close look at it tonight from my seat in a GO bus and yes, the middle bits look really far advanced.....the base/anchors for the street lights are in place and the base does look like it is ready to be paved (don't bombard me with technical stuff to refute this....just a layman's view)....I must say that even from that point of view I really had a hard time seeing 4 lanes of traffic fitting in that middle strip.

Last couple of weeks have seen a whole lot of paving going on in that middle strip from, say, the 407 south to the 401. Progress!

Looks like the fall before either ramp opens.

The westbound is held up with the rebuilding of the bridge at Mathson that cause the traffic to be shifted. Don't see why the eastbound can't be open

Reading this thread, I wonder, is the 410 really a continuation of the 403 as people think, or does 410 branch off the 403 south of the 401? It looks to me that the 403 ends at the 401 just to the east. Like this:

I also think of the 401/403/410 interchange as more like a stack interchange and a second nearby directional interchange rather than a single stack.

403 was to continue east and connect with Richview Expressway, with 410 to interchange with it between Eglinton and Eastgate

I know that. But it doesn't answer the question about the ambiguous situation whether the 403 continues as the 410 or ends by merging with the eastbound 401. And why the two highways weren't just built as a straightforward single freeway that just changes numbers at the 401.

Ask MTO that question, as I always knew it as 2 highway starting at 401. 403 loops up to the 401 now, instead of going east straight as plan.

Just to be clear,
403 and 410 were built roughly at the same time.
410 was first in the mid to late 1970's, but only as a 2 lane arterial road
401 was next in the late 70's to early 80's.
Then 401 was made into a freeway in the mid to late 80's.

The original plan was for 403 to be built essentially following Eastgate Parkway to the 401-427-Eglinton interchange.
I recall seeing some plans for the Eglinton bridge and there was a proposed LRT of some sort in the median of 410 (when the bridge was designed, I supposed they still assumed that 410 would start at Eastgate Parkway).

If its worth anything, km 0.0 for the 410 is at the 401. I suppose the portion that you indicate is part of the ramp that takes you to the 410.

That seems like a strange starting point, considering the "ramps" are essentially mainline freeway. You'd think the MTO would have designated the connector as 410 after it was linked to 403 north of Matheson.

Indeed. I don't think anyone really understands why MTO didn't simply renumber the entire Mississauga section of 403 to 410 after they (finally) connected the two expressways. That would have solved the geeky need to overlap 403 and QEW from near Ford Drive to the 407 interchange in Burlington.
