How To Bypass Traffic Backup At Winston Churchill
If you use the 401 in both direction daily or sometime, I assume you can do this in both direction as I did this for westbound since I never use the eastbound. You use the off ramp to Winston Churchill that has 2 lanes, but use the south one as goes under the overpass as well the 407 overpasses. It then goes under the 407 flyover that connects to the westbound 401 lanes. You will then rejoin the westbound traffic that is starting see higher speed than it had been seeing.
Right now you can only use this trick westbound, at least to such dramatically great effect. In the eastbound direction, you can use the Winston Churchill exit to bypass some traffic as there is a sort of mini-collector there as well, but you merge back with traffic after Winston Churchill, so you don't get quite as much of a jump.
Hard too see what is taking place west of 25 and need to be on the 401 to see it.
Widening pretty much ends past 25, there is very little to see there.

Shooting from the overpass, it look like you could do the same thing going east as you can going west, but not sure since I never came back that way yesterday. Knowing of this trick will save time and frustration.

I know it goes back to 2 lanes west of 25, what about the interchange that looks to be built there for CN Yard?
 
I drive this everyday (exiting onto Winston Churchill), so you think I'd have more certainty, but I think the 401EB configuration is as below right now. So there is a mini-collector, but it's a lot shorter than the one going WB that takes you from Winston Churchill almost to Trafalgar. I suspect the Winston Churchill exit will eventually get pushed back to the 407EB exit, but not yet.

As for the Tremaine Rd extension (is that what you're talking about wrt CN?), there is lots of evidence of work on either side of the 401 corridor, but nothing so far on the 401 itself in that area.

Late getting these posted that will be in 2 posting thanks to Flickr issues as well changing how to tag them. Tagging this section as well the other phase has seen various format and have not been happy and think I will be on this new style.

I haven't seen any plans for this expansion as some things are straight forward as what will take place and will be assuming on a few location.

Gone from 2 lanes to 4 lanes that is partly open as noted in my last posting. Still at a lost why the west sidewalk is double the width of the east unless being use for a cycling path.

Derry Rd New Overpass could be open late Nov to shift Mississauga Rd on ramp to it to allow finishing the barrier wall and road to shift traffic to the new collectors a few months later.

Last to be posted and all 142 can be seen up on my site.

My take that the exit to Trafalgar Rd will be between the two 407 flyover as I don't see any option to cross the 407 on ramp safety to get to the off ramp.

The only reason I can see for the duel lane on ramp that one lane will connect the Trafalgar Rd off ramp. Can see concrete barrier to split the duel 407 lanes once the centre section is rebuilt so traffic can be shifted to allow it to be built. A barrier will be built to stop traffic from crossing the 407 on traffic. Traffic become 3 lane just to the east of this area at this time. The 2 lanes to the left are part of the off ramp for Winston Churchill as well the on ramp for Winston Churchill.

This shortcut is now gone. It was there for like literally 2 weeks. I can imagine the confusion this may cause. What is also confusing is just before the Trafalgar exit there is an orange electronic sign saying "All traffic must exit" - I couldn't figure out what they meant by that...

Also, I was thinking what may cause confusion in the future is the use of blue overhead signs to indicate both collector lanes and 407. Someone might mistakenly think that the collector lanes are toll lanes.
 
Yeah, they had moved fully over to the new lanes on Friday. The right lane still "exits" under the 407 ramp before merging again just before Trafalgar. This is still a significant jump on traffic, because people still seem oblivious that they can travel that way and stop to merge into the congested left and middle lanes.

I have been driving that section frequently of late, admittedly pre-sunrise and lately in pouring rain. It’s a white-knucle section at best, but the realization that I’m suddenly on a road that’s down to two lanes is a real puzzle. By the time that happens, it’s too late to figure out the signage and how that happened. The design may be reasonable on paper but I find that they are doing a very poor job of marking the road through all the bends and weaves.

It would be nice if they can get the express lanes done until Winston Churchill, that way it goes from 6 to 5 to 4 to 3 lanes, rather than 6 lanes to 3 lanes at Creditview
 
Sorry to those who have to use the 401 daily for the next 6-9 months. We had to go to London on Wed and a good thing we were using the HOV westbound lanes. It took us 5 minutes to get over the new Credit River collector lanes bridge, but would be between 10-15 for the other lanes. Traffic slow down around the 407 and west of Steeles for a short distance. Eastbound was a parking lot west of the Credit bridge to James Snow.

Traffic was slow going in the new collector lanes in Cambridge to 24 and was the same going eastbound.

Traffic was slow going in Cambridge for the new collectors lanes. Unless I was seeing something wrong, it looks like there is a lower grade for the express lanes based on the new centre barrier wall to the new collectors lanes for eastbound.

Steel girders in place for the new bridge west of hwy 8 that will see the existing lanes raise about 8' higher than it is now and remove part of the current dip that will help transports. Saw nothing for the eastbound lanes yet.

Running a haft a day coming home tonight, slow going from Milton to Trafalgar Rd. As I parked at Halton Hill Outlet, had a look at the highway. Eastbound still moving slow while the westbound was a parking lot.

Before we left Halton Hill Outlet, had a look at the highway. Said were did the westbound traffic go as it was wide open with little traffic while the eastbound was flowing freely some what.

Got on and ran into slow traffic at the 407 area where it started to come a crawl until Mississauga Rd. As we hit the Mississauga on ramp for the northbound Mississauga Rd, traffic went to wide open. No idea why traffic is an issues for Mississauga on ramp based on the traffic that use it that has nothing to a few.

Plan on shooting the corridor on the way home, but being late and dark, could not.

Couldn't see much with the snow of the centre lane going west other than steel beams place over the 16 Mile Creek. Coming home, crews were working in the dark as well paving in a few areas. Looks like a large section of the express lanes in both direction pave with centre barrier wall being pour. Still a lot of construction taking place for the express lanes with piles of dirt for it.

Based on my last travels on the 401, this is worse than the past trips.

May try to get some shots this weekend.

More up on site

As it stands, 10 lanes mostly paved from Region Rd 25 to where it becomes 12. Paving missing at the rebuilding of the overpass of CN Halton Sub Bridge. Centre barrier still needs to be pour as well foundation for the light mast.

The new eastern span of Highway 24 over the 401 in Cambridge has opened. I drove on it a few days ago and was happy to see a wide multi-use trail section that was well separated from Hwy 24 traffic by a concrete wall (not yet connected to anything, but good to see nonetheless). This is much improved from what MTO did with Victoria St over Hwy 85 a few years ago (just a normal width sidewalk with a standard curb). They're using both the old and new spans of Hwy 24 at the moment, but I imagine that they'll shift all Hwy 24 traffic onto the new eastern span soon so that they can drop and rebuild the western one.
