Besides the fact that the quote doesn't make much sense - replace shelters with...shelters?, He advocates forcible hospitalization of all homeless/panhandlers (there's not much of a distinction going on.)

I can scarce imagines the legal and practical problems this would entail, not to mention the small army needed to implement it.

This on the same day as his remarks about weeding out smelly, whiny communists. Was this guy hired in an attempt to make Ford look passably sane and practical?
The only former leftie who made such an about-face that I can think of off-the-cuff was Barbara Amiel. But her leftadelic experience was pretty much limited to her student days. Mammoliti was a former Union president and NDP' MPP. Very peculiar.

This mayoralty sure has people talking. With every outing that I take, of late, I hear dissin' going on, in theatre and/or cinema lobbies, in restaurants, in lineups, in stores. I have yet to hear anyone in these groups defending mayortwins and their entourage.

This is all downtown action I'm referring to, but consider also that I've got suburban relatives who really regret having voted for the mayortwins.

So, there is a good outcome of all of this, people chatting about politics.

The whole hospital thing is dumb and illegal, police and paramedics can't just take people to the hospital, they have to come willingly or be apprehended under the mental health act.
Not to mention the whole prospect of filling already full emergency rooms with non-sick people is pretty ridiculous.

He didn't suggest a 'legal panhandling zone' per se, but that he's ban it everywhere on Toronto property other than Queen's Park. He is trying to get more attention from the province on the matter by encouraging people to be visible right where the provincial leaders work. Or do you not think the province should be pulling more of their weight on this?

It seems that Mammoliti wants to stop public funds going towards shelters and get some private sector (yeah, right) and the province to open a homeless shelter.

The whole send panhandlers to the hospital thing seems like dumping the problem onto the province. (province pays for hospitals, right?)

Isn't this like some guy asking the government for handouts? Fordies don't like the whole welfare state thing, and here we have Mammoliti essentially wanting the province to pay for a Toronto problem. Seems a bit socialist to me.

What services could we/should we be expanding and improving?

I was going to post this in a new thread, but turns out I don't have sufficient privileges. Anyway, the reason I ask is that a lot of people are getting worked up and organised for what seems to be an all out effort to stop cuts, i.e. keeping things the same. Seems like a bit of a waste of peoples' energies . . . Apart from expanding access to affordable/attainable housing in the city (given the extent of the housing waitlist) and expanding access to affordable/attainable childcare (again, given the extent of the waitlist) what other services/programs/products offered by the City need to be improved and expanded?

People make idle threats all the time. There's a huge leap between making a threat and someone actually doing (making him a martyr) , though.

In light of obvious environmental issues and Toronto's severe traffic congestion, why would the city approve policies that encourage its citizens to rely increasingly on cars? Could the city's marginalising of cyclists account for an increasing number who break the rules (by riding on the pavement, using their phones while cycling, not signalling their left-hand turns, etc)? This approach should not only be seen as misguided, but dangerous
