unfortunately with Islam-inspired names it's very hard to do specific searches. you have like 50 names in various combinations with one another and that's it. There are a million Ahmed Ibrahims (and a million Ibrahim Ahmeds) -- makes sleuthing very difficult! anyway the missing guy is interesting as he seems to be from the area and we know all kinds of crazy stuff was going on in the Dixon bldgs around the time he disappeared.

What are Uncles Rob and Doug doing to this young man? I have two son's of similar age. Post undergraduate degrees, not quite sure how to proceed in life. It is not fair to this kid. Of course he appears lazy. That's part of the age group. Carrying the Ford legacy is surely enough to induce escapist indolence and passive aggressive non-compliance.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. If you're putting your name out there and running for public office, there is a hell of a lot you could do, regardless of who your uncles are, unless they're holding him hostage. And he is doing absolutely nothing.

Ford math is amazing, isn't it? Both HRV and LRV cars need the same maint. and so do rails. LRV runs (usually above ground) don't suffer from staffing stations, safety features such as vent fans, to name a few things.

Does anybody have any idea where the Ford campaign came up with the estimates of building various sections the transit plan? The numbers in the doc look suspiciously low to me. I mean, Rob is saying you can connect Don Mills to McCowan for $1.8 million. But the distance doesn't seem shorter on his map than the BD extension, which is costing a lot more. Maybe he's not planning to build any stations. And how does he intend to tunnel under the Don Valley for $1.4 billion?

According to the last page, the costing comes from TTC and Metrolinx:

o The Toronto Subway Expansion Plan (Phase 1) will cost approximately $9-Billion (TTC and Metrolinx).

I wonder how those agencies will respond tomorrow. The $9B figure seems really low.

If I've got my math right (doubtful) Rob's estimate of per km cost is about 60% of TTC's estimate of per kilometre cost. So, his $9 billion is closer to $15 billion. I can't tell whether Rob's estimates are for the total costs of each line or whether they represent Toronto's one-third share. But it doesn't matter. If he's talking about total costs, he's simply insane. If not, he's asking the feds and the province for $15 billion each. Good luck with that. The federal government's New Build Canada Fund is only $10 billion over 10 years. Rob wants all of it — and 50% more!

It's all a conspiracy. Rob Ford could build a subway for $100 a kilometre, but those gravy-sucking elites won't let him! He's going to re-use the old tunnelling rigs, raise the Titanic with ping-pong balls and put in elevators. If you weren't all drunk on imported chardonnay, you'd know that.

I believe this was shown here upthread eons ago, but take a look at the costs per kilometre from various cities. David Soks says that subways subways subways cost cost cost about $400 million per kilometre. Ford is lying again to make noise.

Whatever the cost, the elephant in the room is that building more subways should never have been stopped once the roll-out began 50-60 years ago. I don't really think the people that originally conceived the Toronto subway and transit system ever imagined that future generations would have let their work stagnate like that. Now we have to recover lost ground to catch up to the present *and* build for the future. I think we'll need more bus service, followed by LRT, followed by subways *and* use existing rail infrastructure if the whole thing is going to work. It's not one solution or the other.

Transport problems cost business millions if not billions per year in productivity. Capitalism needs public transport. There's nothing socialist about it.

And props to Greg Banks for posting the original links to the Levy Rapid Transit in Toronto webbook. They knew *what* we needed to do 60 years ago. The problem has (only) been *how*. Ford makes it all harder by pretending it's easy. That's another reason why he's an asshole.

And London has been building LRTs like a drunken weasel for the past 20 years or more, since they built Canary Wharf and began building new housing in the east end.

No need to confuse the issue with facts ...

If mayor asshat had a clue and ever ventured outside his bubble, he'd know London is absolutely a bad example because while the Overground is part of the tube system, it is not part of the underground. The overground is however and integral part of the overall transport system and a very good one at that, speaking as someone who has used it many times, including just a few weeks ago.
