Overheard on his radio show (via Twitter):

Wonder if the "jealousy" was over the supposed 'low' number of councillors in Markham, or that Markham residents have more representation in council (~20000 residents per councillor in Markham versus over 60000 per councillor in Toronto).

A citizen of Markham may see it as better representation. But, I think Rob wouldn't see the better representation, but as a low number of councillors. In fact, I think that he'll prefer there be zero councillors.

Why didn't Rob call a SNOW EMERGENCY? A snow emergency is "when a significant amount of snow falls within an eight hour period. During a snow emergency, it is illegal to park or stop on a snow route. A fine and towing may result."

Instead, Rob worked on individual complaints. Those complaints should have been handled by 311. Rob, as Mayor, should be looking at the big picture, and the big picture would have been to declare a SNOW EMERGENCY.

I guess it was not a "significant amount of snow"!? What would be a "significant amount of snow" for the Mayor to call a snow emergency?

BTW. Hamilton lifted their snow emergency on Sunday. They declared their snow emergency on Friday evening.

A couple of blocks from my home, there is a road on a small hill. The city used to have a box of salt available next to the road, to help automobiles, school buses, etc. spread out if the road got icy in winter. For the last couple there have been no salt box. In fact, looking around the city, I seem to see no salt boxes anywhere, not even on hills. Must be another cost cutting to remove those salt boxes. Another great customer service brought to you by Rob. Tell that to the three cars and one school bus spun out on that road.

Most of the snow route signs I know of (they were along streetcar routes in my neighbourhood) were removed a few years ago ... I'm not sure this policy is still in effect.

WK, I think Ford's a putz as much as the next guy. But it's snow, and there's a lot of it. From all reports the plows and salters, etc. have been working hard to keep the city going, and doing a pretty good job, even if they aren't getting to every little piece of hill near your house. You can't blame Ford for every last little thing that needs to be done during a snowstorm in an enormous city. Please, give it a rest.

According to the City website Snow Emergencies are declared by Transportation (though I bet any Mayor would be consulted) and there are maps of Snow Routes at http://www.toronto.ca/transportation/snow/emergency.htm
Both of the PDF maps that links to are dated from 1999. As I noted earlier the Snow Route signage along many of these routes has been removed.

I don't think these are active web-pages.

Didn't we have the same discussion the last time this happened 5 years ago? http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/showthread.php/6200-Snow-emergency-—-what-snow-emergency

A snow emergency would have cost money. All those tow trucks, extra dump trucks, etc. is not something Rob wants to spend money on. After all, Rob wants city hall to cut another 10%, and a snow emergency would eat up a lot of cash.

Not sure which map I was looking at, but I think the downtown map is post-Dufferin St. jog.
The "Downtown" map does indeed show Dufferin without the jog (as well as with the jog) at http://www.toronto.ca/transportation/snow/pdf/snowemerg2.pdf - however the date in the PDF file is December 1999.

If you go to archive.org's Wayback machine, and check the archived version of the Snow Emergency page from 2004 (which looks the same as today) http://web.archive.org/web/20041204113227/http://www.toronto.ca/transportation/snow/emergency.htm and then go to the 2004 archive of that PDF file at http://web.archive.org/web/20041204...nto.ca/transportation/snow/pdf/snowemerg2.pdf you'll see that back in 2004 that file also showed Dufferin both without the jog!

Isn't that the city has removed all the Snow Route signs more significant than a stale web page that hasn't been refreshed in over a decade?

Why are you blaming this on Rob? The guy is flawed in so many fatal and documentable ways, why make up stuff?

While I do also think it's a bit silly to directly link Ford to imperfect snow removal service this past weekend, I did find it odd that more noise was made this time around about cars parked away from snow banks and thus blocking streetcars. But then 5 years ago, Twitter wasn't around as much as it is now.

Nice detective work on the maps; I still see "Snow Route" signs in a lot of places, but I'll take your word for the fact that many have been removed.

Re: blaming Ford for snow removal delays, I'm with you on this one. It would be nice for Fordites to apologize for blaming Miller in similar circumstances, but that's probably expecting a bit much. In any event, it would be a very sad state of affairs if the lesson learned is that we ought to expect a mayor to personally oversee snow removal.

Is this a case of 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer?'

Globe and Mail: Adam Vaughan aims to join mayor's executive committee

There’s an opening on Mayor Rob Ford’s powerful executive committee – and one of the mayor’s most vocal critics wants to fill it.

Councillors Adam Vaughan, Maria Augimeri, and Vincent Crisanti have expressed interest in joining the committee, according to documents posted on the city website Tuesday.

I can hear Rob saying "over my dead body" ....

Twitter is also reporting that there is going to be a review on what constitutes a snow emergency.

It's obviously going to be useless Etobichoke councillor Crisanti who gets it out of the three listed above. (Because Etobicoke could always use more representation!) He's in Ward 1, next to the Ford Ward 2. Augimeri and Ford have a lot of bad blood too, Gus Cusimano was Ford's pick for Ward 9. Adam Vaughan has little hope.
