Um, I'm trying to figure out if I'm a "champagne socialist" so can somebody give me a detailed explanation of what that is. I thought I was kind of in the middle of the road but since I'm totally anti-Ford, I might just be confused. On the other hand I hate closed door meetings and that whole Tuggs deal thing. Then again, I love the transformation of Regent Park. Oh god, I'm so confused! I need a label! Help me out champagne socialist experts.

You're a Mill Street Brewery socialist!

Sorry, I am not sure I understand. What's difference between a underground streetcar and a subway? I actually think a rapid transit on Eglinton will be popular, providing it's really "rapid".
The TTC and the City are not calling the Eglinton LRT (including the underground section) a subway. Therefore, it's not a subway. Why would they lie?

I'm pretty sure the "champagne socialist" label baffles most downtowners. If anything we're a more pragmatic bunch than suburbanites.

Seriously though, what the hell does that even mean?

Rob Ford idea that buses are better than streetcars:

yeah, right.

Sounds like Edmonton transit. My brother sold his car when he moved downtown (in Toronto) and he lived a good 10 years without owning a car. Then, a few years ago, he had to move to Edmonton for work. After taking the bus in Edmonton, for a few months, he broke down and bought a car. He absolutely hated Edmonton buses. I think we need to be careful about ditching our streetcars for buses. For some reason, I love streetcars and hate buses. I won't take buses even in Toronto.

I don't really care what they are called, as long as they are rapid. However, from my experience with the current streetcars, I am not optimistic. I heard the speed would be 22km/hr vs. 18 km/hr for buses, so I am not sure what's the point. Of course, given this province's track record, I would believe a project when I actually see one.

There are elderly uneducated misinformed persons too. Consider this; if the majority of people are telling you otherwise, shouldn't you start questioning things? At least a bit?

Opinion on this board, and the actual citizens of Toronto vary greatly.

Most of you are horrified of his worship, Mr Ford, the mayor; yet a near majority are prepared to vote him into office. TC may be popular here, but trust me, ask most people on the street - and they're not to happy about having fancy streetcars going down their road. Just look at what happened on St. Clair. Shop owners and residents alike took the TTC to court over the LRT.

adma:

First, that's a rather terrible thing to say; second, those who are opposed to him aren't likely to be gun owners/users. Quite frankly, given the "socialist" rhethoric thrown around, you're are more likely to see a left leaning mayor being the victim than anything.

AoD

Yeah, but beyond the fact that there's means other than guns and "where there's a will, there's a way", it's also a measure of the utter hapless impotence I'm thus far reading in the disenfranchised left. And beyond that, such speculation takes the glib spectacle-digging that somebody like urbandreamer engages in to the not-so-glib next level (maybe by way of veiled warning, or something).

Remember that I'm the person around this joint who upholds 9/11 as the most important aesthetic experience in our lives--albeit as an "aesthetic" that nulls and voids all that is aesthetic. So, if some crazed zealot out there seeks to spectacularly take down Rob Ford and cause mass anarchy and mayhem; well, the sociopathic artistic anarchist in me says, bring it on. It's almost the kind of cathartic endgame the prospect of a Ford mayoralty really ought to demand, rather than this moan, groan, woe is us...

Folks we have a provincial election next year. Transit City can easily be gone if Hudak becomes premier, everyone is forgetting that.

And considering the global shift to the right, I easily see him becoming Premier.

This isn't just a Toronto phenomenon.. People in Ottawa are fed up with the left and are going to be most likely voting a right-wing candidate into office. It's a massive shift to the right that is bound to shake things up, and I guarantee you, Hudak will have no problems becoming the next head of Ontario.

True. McGuinty will not stand to be opposition leaderm he will leave. A highway will tear into Scarborough too.

Given the ominously negative gravity attached to a Ford mayoralty, I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see him assassinated.

I guess nfitz in the rotunda with a candelabra.

I will also get a sick pleasure out of watching some members on this board get an aneurysm when Ford takes over.
Ford isn't winning the election ... he's peaked far too early, giving everyone a chance to expose him for the sham he is. Even the media seems to be into the game in the last couple of days ... he won't be elected, save some bizarre 4-way split.

Hudak will win the provincial elections next year
As if that's ever going to happen. Hudak simply wants to do another Harris. I don't think people will fall for that. Ontario wouldn't replace McGuinty with a left-wing Tory (Tory). You think an right-wing extremist like Hudak has a chance?
