This is the former 'Soaring' property - glad to see that there is still a group out there that wants to develop a nordic spa in the city. This would be a great spot with some awesome top of bank views, mature trees and the rich customer base in SW Edmonton.

Part of me wishes it was more central, but that river valley location, together with synergy from Fort Edmonton Park, Whitemud access, etc, makes this an exciting alternative.

This is a long overdue amenity for Edmonton as a winter city and it was a shame the Fort Ed deal, then Covid, derailed the original plans.

Let's go!

Yeah, the lack of connection to anything else in our city makes this tough. Whyte ave/mill creek sort of area would be better even. But ideally it’s in that central river valley between Hawrelak and Tawatina Bridge.

With the LRT now at Muttart, something in that area feels most opportunistic

Maybe the City could do a land swap with the U of A? They could take over this property for scenic conservation and give the spa owners a more accessible municipal property closer to transit or downtown? What property would you suggest they offer?

I was reading through the planning docs; it says that there are currently no buildings on the site - was this structure already destroyed?

I agree with you all - definitely not an ideal location (was hoping for something like this in Rossdale or near the Muttart) but happy that a nordic spa is being considered!

I don't think the City should expend resources to gain the site for conservation purposes. Plenty of park space in the area and its a perfectly valid development location. Agree, maybe not the best spot for a spa. Would be in favor of the city swapping it to develop as a family oriented social housing site. Good neighborhood, close to schools, transit to rest of town is not bad, etc. But that would probably piss of the neighbors even more than the spa idea.

It was one of the coolest houses in the city that was built by one of the greatest city builders and demolished by the UofA due to ops/maintenance costs:( Truly a shame and yet another architectural loss.

I had the luck of going to one Christmas party there back in 2017 ish as the then UofA President hosted their event at the home.

I am told that there used to be a 'cabin' with a dock along the river back in the day as well...
