Co-organizing a birthday bash for my old man in June. I would be grateful for any advice for venues, with these considerations in mind:

1. Centrally located, near TTC and highways and/or east end bias near Danforth/Beaches
2. Non-bar setting... many non-drinkers in attendance, although alcohol being served is fine (ie restaurant or banquet hall)
3. Informal evening gathering of about 40-50 people
4. Modest budget (so Royal York is out of question)

Hope that helps, and I appreciate any advice!

Have you tried any of the event venues like Carlu or Eglinton Grand?

Evergreen Brickworks
The Best Event Venues in Toronto
Evergreen Brick Works is the ideal special event venue because its cultural and environmental history somehow manages to remain prominent even as it's subject to host some awful corporate hand-shaking event. The former brick quarry has beautiful gardens, stunning heritage buildings, and an eco-friendly design that's brag-worth to all your esteemed guests. The authentic character of the Brick Works could single-handedly put all of Toronto's vanilla banquet halls to shame.

A bunch of interesting options on this site.http://www.blogto.com/toronto/the_best_event_venues_in_toronto

I have a feeling the Carlu is above my price point. I will definitely check out Eglinton Grand. Brickworks and The Globe could be interesting. Thanks!

Globe Bistro has absolutely amazing food. Ill second that recommendation.

For a modest budget, in a smaller setting, the Naval Club near Gerrard/Woodbine might work. There often seems to be booked events there, but I have no idea about the policies ... or food. http://www.navalcluboftoronto.com

There's also the new Shamrock Bowl on Coxwell between Lower Gerrard and Upper Gerrard above that new fitness centre. http://www.shamrockbowl.ca Not sure how well their space works if your not bowling ... but they do bookings, etc.

A conventional banquet hall place, is Ellas on Danforth Road at Danforth Avenue, just west of Warden. http://www.ellas.com Not the Liberty Grand! :)

Shocker, I checked Balmy Beach and you need to be a member to book.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Sorry, I didn't know that. It's a nice place to sit and chatter and share a drink with friends, in case you do get to know a member.

The Massey Goulding Estate might be an option. It's on Dawes Rd, not far from the Main TTC station.

It's a heritage house in a secluded bit of woods, and best of all, the proceeds from the rental goes directly to a community arts not for profit that uses that same space for a youth outreach program.

In the interest of disclosure, I am formerly a member of their Board of Directors. Nevertheless, from your description, it sounds like it could be one venue to consider.
