Who do we know of that might be associated with Tory and/or pushing for SmartTrack whose name could be J. C****?

Interesting.

Jumping to the "Facts about Fasttrack".

Number one:
  • From Unionville to Union Station the current commute is about 134 minutes. On the SmartTrack line: 42 minutes. Less than half the time!
134 minutes? A quick glance at the current schedule http://www.gotransit.com/timetables/en/PDF/Quicktables/06150915/USTN/UVGO.pdf shows that it's currently 25 to 41 minutes.

  • Approximately 90% of SmartTrack is on existing GO tracks, so it will not displace any existing roadway.
That's just not true. It's only single track up to Stouffville. There's no way that the extra track that is needed is only 10% of the track.

Not sure who is behind it, but with such blatant and obvious lies, I don't see how anyone would take these clowns seriously.

CP24 is taking them seriously. Sigh.

In all seriousness however, I think that a viable option would be to not simply use the UPX system we have now for Smarttrack, but to combine the two and trash the Eglinton Spur.

Metrolinx has already stated that they want to Electrify the UPX and they have decided to order entirely new trainsets rather than convert the current diesel fleet (will be cheaper than conversion and they want to use the UPX fleet elsewhere for all day service on a line with lower ridership)

I could see a system where UPX and Smarttrack use the same rolling stock, but operate at 7.5 minute frequencies. Every even train stops at a bunch of new stops along the Kitchener Line to Pearson, and every odd train is Express to Pearson, no stops. The other direction every 15 minutes making all stops at new stations to Unionville on Stouffville line (no express)

Fare could be Distance and Express service based using Presto. Tap on/off before Pearson and its TTC fare ($3). Tap off at Pearson on a NON-express train and its say $8. Tap off an express train and its $15. You pay more to use express but the option to save money and ride the milk-run exists.

Eglinton Spur can just be the damn LRT extension.

This way we get Smarttrack for cheaper by utilizing existing services and Metrolinx gets to keep their prized express train service.

Makes perfect sense and is a lot like how the Leonardo Express operates in Rome. The only complication would be that at the ends, the "stopping" train would have to leave just after the "express" train, as its running time is greater. If it leaves 3-5 minutes after the express, it reaches the far end before the next express catches up.

Tons of interesting material in the reports and appendices at http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2015.EX9.1.

Main take away (not spelled out yet clear as day): Eglinton West routing for Smart Track is dead, dead, dead, deader even than Steven Harper. They are reworking the LRT extension with options to cut minor stops and increase grade separation.
