Great pics. I've always thought that back end of downtown reminded me of those homes built into cliffs in New Mexico or those coastal towns of france.

If you were making a small film, and wanted one midsized town to cover a variety of looks, this just might be your choice.

I thought it was depressed too, but there wasn't much decay downtown. I did see some sketchy areas further northeast along Niagara St. but nothing too bad.

thx for the photos. i've never been to st. catharines. always pass by it on the QEW though.

great pics of the city where I was born! Been meaning to get down there to do a series. It has indeed survived nicely even after the highly reduced presence of GM. I am wondering how you got that metro population figure though... that must be the entire Niagara Region, yes? Still no doubt that this is a fairly dense section of the country, even with all the rural areas between cities...

The metro pop is Statscan's number for the St. Catharines CMA, it would include Niagara Falls, Welland, Thorold, & I'm not sure but possibly Port Colbourne and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Not the entire Niagara region though.

cool, thanks for the explanation... now does that just apply to St Kitts because it is the biggest city or can we say Thorold has a metro pop of 390k ??? lol...

I looked it up, the CMA includes the whole eastern part of Niagara Region: St.Kitts, Niagara Falls, Thorold, Welland, Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Wainfleet, Lincoln and Pelham.

I was very impressed with St. Catharines the first time I visited. It has a much better downtown than you'd expect.
